  1. I have no clue what you are asking......Exhaust Gas Recirculation is what EGR stands for. I don't get the EDC, do you mean Electronic Diesel Control? A TDI300 uses a mechanical pump, and all you did was making it richer and now it feels better, I would not get carried away diesel engines destroy them selfs way easier than petrol engines.

Yes, electronic diesel controlled is what I was on about. Several disconnected points I wanted clarifying, which you have, so ta.

I was very modest in my tweakery. Decided to leave thimgs as close to standard as possible, but still improve the motor. No black smoke for me! I expect a more significant improvement when I decat and remove the middle box.

  2. ok. bit feeling a bit nooby here, but i'm not proud, so i'll just come out and ask!

    as i understand it:

edc fuel pumps are 'fly by wire', fitted to autos post '95 and some '97 and later manuals.

there will be a mass flow meter on such a setup and it has some sort of ecu/chip metering and dispensing fuel to the pump.

they're generally considered less desireable than a fully mechanical (egr)setup, though they deliver more power (to compensate for auto box?)

a non edc setup will have an egr valve that you can throw in the ditch, cos they're rubbish.

unplugging and forgetting your egr will provide the same benefits as removing the valve and swapping the intercooler pipe.

a non edc pump may still have a throttle position sensor.

am i getting somewhere near the truth here? i ask cos i've a 98 manual, with egr, no mass flow meter and what i assume is a throttle position sensor. i had a wee tweaky-woo of the pump earlier, which has given a bit more power and it got me asking myself questions...!

  3. a weird thing happened when out in the disco. this was the series of events...

hazard lights came on for no reason.

stoped the car, put hazard light switch on and off, still flashing.

with the switch on, the relay next to the fusebox in drivers footwell clicked in time with the hazard lights

pulled the plug on the bottom of the imobiliser box(?), alarm sounded. plugged it back in again.

thought i'd better see if i'd dropped a whatsit doing that, so tried the blip-blip key fob. did nothing.

tried to start the engine, thinking i'd probably burgered the imobiliser. fired straight up, and the hazards stopped.

    drove home, no further issues.

so. anyone know what's going on? i hate imobilisers, and i'd be happy to rip it out if it can be done without messing up the central/blip-blip locking. any i]suggestions would be appreciated.

  4. I keep seeing old discos and the occasional defender being sold as suitable for export. I suppose it makes sense, 200 and 300'shave no electrickery to screw them up, so like old bedford 330's and mercs there could be a market for them. But has the export market really overtaken the domestic demand yet?

  5. always miss the sight of a nice boxy truck in the driveway nigel! the disco just doesn't compensate!

it's a tricky one this.the rear x-member looks freshly waxoiled, which bothers me. i bought a '91 90 in haste once. looked tidy anc clean, and nicely looked after/waxoiled underneath wasn't too much later (but too late) i started to realise it was just covering rust, mud, and anything else you may not want to find.

one of the rear sping hangers detached 75% of the way round on the wat home from hereford. loud bang as it jammed against the wheel arch. i was younger and stoopider and i paid for it.

if...IF i were to go for this it'd stay uk reg, as i'm in the uk 50% or more of the year, so import tax etc wouldn't factor. 200tdi would come later. i know of a disco locally a couple of hundred euro would buy.

realistically, i'd need him to px my disco at about 1500 squid, and in all fairness, i doubt he would. it may be worth that, sure, but you don't give full value on a px do you?

we're driving straight through the town he lives in later in the week on the way to sunflower fest, so it might make sense to take a look then.

i do rather feel i'm just missing the 110 nigel bought at the weekend already! ........must.....control.....urges.......buy.....windows.....not.......110.....!

  6. This wouldn't be the first time i've played this game on the forum. it's usually helpfull, and always interesting. so here goes...

1990 turbo diesel 110 csw, under 100k, straight bodywork, clean interior, supposedly solid in chassis and bulkhead, doors supposedly solid, full mot, NI reg. £2500. may be able to chop in my 98 disco for half decent money.there's a catch, right? (apart from the engine)

    shoot, fellas.

  7. Thanks stevie d, got back just fine. The constant checking the mirror / listening for the clunk kept me awake, which was handy. 36 hour round trip with 2 sets of 2 hours 'sleeping' on the ferry. A bit mental really. Should make a mental note to stop and sleep instead of dosing on red bull next time!

Just rechecked my source, may have been referring to td5, so I guess its just repeat the fiddly process of last time. Only use proper nuts this time!

  8. i removed the front prop from the disco cos the uj's need doing. i had a td5 front prop (from a defender) and as they looked the same length i put it on until i get the uj's sorted.

i seem to have vibration now, and inspection shows that the yokes are out of phase on the td5 one fitted. there is a pretty good explanation of why here...

    http://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac41/yostumpy/pshft028.jpg

so.... should i take it off und run in diff lock until the original unit is repaired, or just get the yokes in phase and put it back on again?

  9. i had a looksee under the rubber mat thang on top of the engine and noticed a small but longish sticker on the rocker cover. it has the land rover logo on the left and then some print that has rubbed off to the right of that. it's made of that thick plasticky material that most of the factory stickers (like the 'dont drain cooling system' one on the front panel) are made of.

then i noticed that the engine has been sprayed in a very aluminium coloured silver before the sticker was applied.

so, i guess what i'm getting at is does this suggest the engine has had a rebuild at some point? it wouldn;t surprise me, as it seems a good lump for 227,000 old. or is this how the later engines left the factory (it's a 98)?

    any ideas?

i'll get a picture of the sticker if my description is just jibberish!

  10. is beluga black (code 416) a laquered finish, or just plain paint?

there are some ebay sellers selling the touch up kit in 2 cans, matt black and laquer, but there are one or 2 just selling the paint can.

    cheers
