  1. ok, so that would give the effect of always needing to push a little to the right to smoothly engage or disengage? it's a cheap enough part, so i guess i have to remove almost the entire centre console and gearbox tunnel to get at it?
  2. no, she says we don't need winch. she says as long as the new tyres are knobbly enough we shouldn't need one anyway. she did however say that since i've hydrolocked an engine driving through a flood in our old 90, we could probably justify a snorkle. ? really? ???? i know i ain't dreaming cos i just changed a nappy. mind you, this is the woman who, when i last bought a slab of duty free beer said 'hadn't you better get 2, cos you'll only drink it all and regret running out?' and then she gave me some money. it's true. what times we live in, what times.......
  3. ok. next issue. my near perfect girlfiend has an issue with my floppy stick. that is to say it only pulls one way, so i'm guessing a spring or something that should place it bang in the middle when in neutral is worn, snapped or missing? what's the likely diagnosis? got a part number or a proper name for what i seek? oh, we're talking r380 here, you mucky minded individuals.
  4. poor me, aint i got it rough. i buy the new baby a disco for his birthday (4 days before mine conveniently enough) and now i gotta upgrade it for him. Got some +2 hd springs from the for sale forum and some decarbon gas shocks on the way from paddocks to match. Now for the next issue with the truck. I'll be needing a fresh thread for that one. Wouldn't want to go off topic.......
  5. i had some decarbons on a scrapiron kit i bought and, without much point of reference, found them to be good. they never got any abuse, so i suppose they would be. ome's are, of course, the cat's t****, buti don't think they'll be within budget. maybe go black and orange then, they'll match my chainsaw trousers.....
  6. if got me springs sorted, and now i need some +2shcocks to suit. there's no shortage of places selling britpart and procomp ones, but since i got a good deal on the springs i thought i'd put the change into the shocks. so i was thinking monroe or maybe blistein? the latter probably being a bit dear. where's the best place to get them, or any other suggestions would be good. i want them by the weekend, so i can get lifting!
  7. well now i've heard it all. the new disco's ride is so soft and comfortable it makes her feel sick, so she wants me to go to billing tomorrow and buy some stiffer taller springs. unbelievable. how han i live with someone as demanding as that? she 'll expect me to put mud tyres and hd bumpers on next. shocking......
  8. HA!now i look a plonka! the tyres i gon on are 235's so i guess that means they'll fit! so the question must be, how tall a tyre can i get away with standard, and lifted? what a goon i am........
  9. hey all. i just bought myself a 3 door disco and need to beef it up a bit with some new boots. without upping the suspension, will 235 70 16's fit ok? what is considered to be the biggest you can go to at standard height and at +2? i once tried to force some dirty great bronco dirt devils onto a rangie, with plus 2 spring and 3 inch spacers it was still a squeeze, and i dontreally wanna chop up the arches on my lovely new family car!
  10. hi, i'm probably gonna put the roll bar on ebay this weekend, unless of course you want first refusal as a forum member. cheers, rowan

  11. that sounds like a pretty good compromise between utility/family vehicle. i'd like to see a couple of snaps if you've got any. the buggy sounds ideal too, very modular. i'll have a look on ebay....... any experience of the landrover branded ones? i guess you pay a lot for the name, but i don't think a lot of our kit's gonna be brand new anyway. quality 2nd hand is more our style. we aint posh, see?!?
  12. mmmm...... not too bad a thing having the missus all squished up against me! so it's baby on the passenger seat then and begin the hunt for a csw body. i got 2 years to find one. thanks for all the advice, yes even the first couple! we're not sure about a name yet, i was thinking either chassis for a girl or axle for a boy. is that cruel or just a kind of land rover chavie-ness which is entirely acceptable? ; ) we're open to suggestions..........
  13. not the daftest thing i've ever heard.....! might be pushing my luck there though. if i don't play my cards right, she might make me trade it in for a freelander! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. OK. baby due in june. good times. got a 3 seat hi cap. possibly not a perfect family car, but hey. the missus is as good as gold, she says it's good enough as long as the sprog doesn't end up sat in the back with the dogs. a fair point, i suppose. so, the simplest thing would be a baby seat that is narrow enough to fit on the middle seat and still leave a little elbow room. they may exist, but i don't know who makes them. any ideas anyone? other option, swap the body for a 5 door csw one. wouldn't mind that as it goes, but i can see it being a bit of a costly way round things. i'm not really keen to get rid of the truck cos i know it now, and it's basically good, engine gearbox, all totally reliable. and it's mine..... any advice peeps?
  15. A more common size? exactly my thinking. To my mind 750's are a pretty common size and narrow enough to fit on the merc rims. Since at least 4 of the tyres we've got have seen better days, buying 7 (gotta have a spare!) isn't that big a jump. Excellent table by the way, should ease my girlfriends mind a bit. New boots here we come!
  16. My girlfriend has a 1985 mercedes 407d van which she has an unhealthy obsession with. Good girl, says i! Thing is, it running on 10 ply 6.50x16' which are a pig to source new, let alond second hand. So, my question is, if the van's gross weight is 3500kg, has twin rear wheels, and is currently on 10 ply radials, would i get into horrible trouble if i put a set of lower ply landrover 7.50's on? My hi cap has 8 ply remold mud tyres and has been known to carry quite a lot of weight at times with no bad results. What would be a safe alternative to the rockinghorse shoes she's got at the moment?
  17. Thanks weston, concise and clear as ever! It's good to have experts (and buddies) on hand for info!
  18. Hi all. Fitted new pads all round to my hi cap and now i got a helluver squeel coming from the back. the new pads didn't come with the ali anti rattle jobbies and the old ones were shot, so i chucked em. same with the return springs that the retainers slide through. shot and binned. a mate says i should smear a bit of copper grease on the back of the pads and all should be well. is it that simple? i'm sure the ali plates were put in there for a reason, can i just slip in a couple if pieces made from my neighbours caravan sides? would a little vibration really cause all that god awful dog-curdling noise? makes my skin crawl, it's 'orrible! cheers!
  19. sounds like a logical and scientific reason to avoid fairy liquid. I'll get myself down to the camping store and see what they say. We're expecting rain later so that may save me a job too!
  20. First, my little gloat! After religiously searching ebay since november, my daily diligence has paid off! I managed to bag myself a hi cap canopy and hoop set with all the fixings for £100. Considering it'd probably stand me nearly 700 squid new, i'm a little pleased. Now i need to give it a good clean and waterproof it. Is washing up liquid and a nail brush or simelar suitabe to clean it? I ain got a clue about proofing it, so any advice would be appreciated. Oh, i,ve now got a safety devices roll bar to suit a hi cap for sale if anyone's intersted, don't recon the come up second hand very often...
  21. I used to weigh in busses and coaches for a living, and found that beating your fists down onto the wheel at opposite sides ie 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock would usually get most wheels off. Admittedly there's more leverage on a bigger wheel but it's worked on weeny car wheels too. Wd is guaranteed to help, and i concur that leaving the nut on is a must if you progress onto the 'beat the back with a lump hammer' technique, which can be effective too. I'd still try fists on opposite corners first tho.
  22. If anyone's interested in a picture, search the wanted forum for hcpu. Theres only a couple of hits, the pics are in the most recent post. or if you feel really lazy just click this
  23. Hmm. Try this: http//forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=4252&hl=hcpu i'm trying this through my mobile not a pc so if it don't work, that'll be why. Didn't work, did it?!? I'll mess with it when the laptop's charged.
  24. Cheers western, i saw that too. I've got a daily search mantra: hcpu, hi cap, hicap, hi capacity, high capacity, high cap. In that order. Daily. For months now! Sad but true. I'm gonna have a punt on that one i recon. Would be a good buy if the price doesn't rocket. As for roll bars i've never seen another one either. I put a couple of photos in the wanted adds a while ago, but can't work out how to link/copy to this thread. still pretty noob to all this foruming! They look great with a hi lift and ropes strapped to em! Poser? Moi? Maybe....
