1. just serviced a 2001 Defender TD5.

Changed all the filters and oil, then changed the fule filter.

Went through the priming process, all was fine.Left it ticking over and after about 5 mins, the engine spluttered and stopped - would not ,and will not start.

It turns over ,but will not fire.

It was low on fuel and I thought prhaps it had run out.Fuelled it back up,re-primed - still wont fire up.

Started on a process of elimination. From what I can see and hear - the pump is making a noise -burt doesnt appear to filling up the fuel filter.

Having disconnected the flow and return pipes,I can feel pressure, but no fule to the filter.

All,and any suggestions are more than welcome.

  2. Driving home from work tonight when all of sudden, massive amounts of black smoke from the exhaust!

Pulled over very quickly and turned engine off - engine wouldnt stop -very high reving for about 5 seconds -until I managed to stall it.

I got a tow home off a friend and have begun to start stripping it down.

I have managed to get the turbo and manifold off in one.

I want to know what my best options are - and is it likely to have damaged anything else engine wise.

Sould I get this one repaired or get a new one?

I am a little dubious about second hand as I dont want it happening again.

lastly - what is likely to have caused it to go?

  3. Got a 110 V8 1987 which has been converted to run on LPG

On either side of the engine, attatached to the heads are these 2 units.

the units have 3 pipes converging into a square metal box which once appeared to have a hose on the end which has now been removed.

the end where the hose were attached have been crimped. They do appear to be drawing air into the engine.

I want to know what they are and can i remove or re-instate them

  4. So there should be a power feed to the gauges.

From looking initially, there only appears to be wiring going to the O/S/ tank. The gauge on that side has a small loom comming from it which has a push fit connector .From the connector thew loom appears to go to the front of the vehicle,to the switch and LED gauge I assume.

I must say that the short loom connector looks a bit crappy to say the least.

If I get a multi meter on the loom then there should be some kind of feen to at leat one of the wires?

  5. I have had a chance to have a look underneath to day and upon cleaning the area around each tank,I can now see a gauge on each tank. Both showing empty though?

Not to sure whats going on .Put £30 of gas in before collection.Only done around 100 miles. The LED gauge was showing red after the gas was put in,That still hasnt changed either.

I take it the tank gauges work on pressure alone, what I mean is they dont require power to show a reading on them?

  6. Just bought a V8 110 with a 5 speed box.Its fitted with a GKN overdrive unit which lights up but wont engage.

The gear box is fine and smooth in reverse and 1-4 gears. It selects 5th nicely ,but on release of the clutch makes a noise like a machine gun.

Is the box knackered,or could it be something to do with the overdrive unit perhaps.

If thew box is knackered can I fit a discovery R380 unit .

  7. Just purchased a v8 110 that has been fitted with a 3.9efi unit ,

This has in turn been fitted with an emmegas LPG system.

The engine is running as sweet as a nut on gas but the switch over unit is constantly showing the tanks as empty(red light is on)Put 50 litres in it yesterday?

    Any one got any suggestions.

Secondly, its seems to start on gas and run well but if you try and run on petrol it doesnt want to know.

Are these issues likely to be a big specialist job or something I can resolve.I dont have a user manual for it either. If anyone has one and could send me a copy that would be great.

  8. I am in the process of buying a 300tdi Disco for the engine. The vehicle has been stood since failing its m.o.t.

The problem lies in asmuch as the owner has lost the key.I want to make sure its starts before I buy.He is happy for me to break the steering lock to get it started.

Firstly,is it fitted with an alarm or immobiliser, and will it just crank over and not start without the key .

Any suggestions because I dont want to butyit to find the engine is knackered and be left with a pile of scrap.

cheers.

  9. etch primer folllowed by 2k primer.Wet flat with 800 wet and dry, cellulose or 2k basecoat, topped off with 2k high solids laquer.

I get my paint from JAWEL paints

Bonatti grey is a nice gun metal colour, its the colour you find on the centre of most Disco ES Alloys.

Hope this is of some help.

  10. Wifey got home last night and said that the Defender was leaking oil.

She said she had been travelling down the raod at about 60mph when she heard an unusual noise coupled shortly after by a smell of burning, but thought no more of it.

I checked under the bonnet this morning and the PAS reservoir is empty. You can see fluid has come from the pump and been sprayed around by the pulley.

Is the pump likely to be knackered or is it worth trying to get a seal kit.

    Any suggestions?
