  1. Hi All,

I have a full width intercooler for the 300tdi (not fitted yet), anyway i want to fit a boost gauge so questions are:-

    1, Which type/make etc

2, Installation tips, piccies would be nice (bit thick here)

3, How easy is it to make it all work or do i need an adult?

    Regards

  2. Cylinder heads on ebay, i have just done turbo as my one was dead when i bought it (another rip-off), the difference between a working one and a duff one is considerable. Be wary of trying to extract more power, these are old lumps and built for slogging not thrashing, especially when pulling 2 tons of car along, i have read some pretty bad things.

    Good luck

Be warned their are lots os carp *new* heads out their, saw one last month from eblag only fit for scrap, luckily he got his money back.

Just because its new and cheap does not mean its any good, better spending the extra folding stuff and getting one from Turners IMHO.

  3. hi looking for any help / advice got a 300 tdi (in a rangie) and need to replace the crank pully followed advice on here on how to get the bolt undone and it has freed it off so it turns for a bit then just jams up and will not move at all (had a 4ft bar on it)

has any one else had this issue? and if so how did you get around it?

at the moment i have removed the starter motor so i can jam the flywheel however the bolt is not turning really need to get this off as want to use the rangie.

oh it s a range rover 300 tdi auto and factory fitted if that makes any diffrence

    cheers

Maybe not for the perfectionists on here but oxy/acet till glowing will get it off, had to do that once on a 300tdi in the past.

  4. I have an alisport full width one and it's very nicely made, and seems to get the job done. Alisport were very helpful. They sometimes sell them cheaper at shows if that fits in with your plans.

    Hi

I spoke to Allisport at Billing this weekend and they will fit one for £350 inc vat (full width), plus do the neccessary adjustments to the fueling.

Bell Auto Services apparently do them as well and they are considerably nearer only 35miles away, but i know nothing about them at all.

  5. Was pottering about the truck and went for a test run just now - am seeing white smoke and have a slight leak at the front right of the head where it looks a little damp. No sign of oil in the coolant or water in the oil yet but am I right in thinking maybe the gasket is on the way?

I drive pretty hard!! Any advice on the where to buy the best replacement gasket and any other little bits that I can do at the same time?

    Cheers

    Andy

Head gasket is an easy job, i think Les has done an excellent write up in the technical forum somewhere. I would only use an origonal Elring gasket available from most places, whatever you do stay away from Britpart better known a sh-tpart, for their quality or lack of it. What engine is it?

  6. Hi All,

Her indoors who only drives autos (3 pedals gear lever and a steering wheel is too much for her few braincells  )

Has decided that she would like a 90. Anyway i first considered a 300tdi for several reasons, mainly because i have done the conversion before (in a 110) and found no major problems in doing it.

Anyway after much deep thought, well several cans of Carlsberg, decided on the TD5 option, as the wife is paying, just considering buying a TD5 90 and throwing in a auto box from a td5 disco etc.

Now what is wrong with that method?, i am sure someone has done it and found the pitfalls etc, or as the wife is paying should it go to Ashcrofts as i`m sure they do the conversion.

Decided on the TD5 because of the increase in power over the 300Tdi, which should make the Autobox option work better.

    Any ideas etc greatly welcomed

  7. There are a few threads about pedal lock systems but most have turned into general security discussions.

I'm considering buying one of These... This will be in addition to a few other bits of security kit, and is designed to make a thief think that mine would be too much like hard work and move onto another :P

Has anyone used one? Are they easy to get on and off? Has anyone's wagon been broken into with one of these fitted?

If I get one I'll do a bit of a forum review.

Well i have one of these the mk1 type, excellent bits of kit, i added the end plate myself. My truck was broken into one night but at least the truck was undriveable.

  8. Dear All

Ive been hankering after a Disco again, but aint got much money, so Ive swapped one of my old bikes for a 1995 Disco ES with problems in the MOT dept..! boot floor gone and more worryingly the offside rear sill.

Ive got a Kempi MIG which im ok at larger metals but dont know if I can do this myself, looks like the sill is a bu..er to get at. Any help would be much appreciated pretty please. Thanks, Steve down in sunny Cornwall.

Sill is easy especially if its a 5 door, ignore the very expensive land Rover part its vastly overpriced. What you need is 1.3 metres of 100x60x3mm box section, cap off the ends either angled or flat, cut out all of the crappy old sill at the front and back, offer up box section mark where door post/pillars are, cut out where marked on box section on the face you will no find with a bit of persuation the box will slide up behind the door posts, fully weld front and rear, job done will out last the rest of the vehicle, boot floor is easy just takes time especially drilling out the old spot welds

  9. the 300 turbo is part of the manifold, and as such can't be separated.

Er not true the Turbo is a seperate item to the manifold (2 pieces), i know this for a fact as i have just fitted a new turbo to my 300 tdi 110,

  10. Hello all,

I am considering doing the Balkan Rally (http://www.balkanrally.com/) in my 200tdi '93 Land Rover Discovery, however I am very hesitant as I'm not too keen on any major breakdowns in Eastern Europe!

The rally does not involve any off roading, it purely a road event, so there will be no off road related damage.

I am essentially curious as to what type of things go wrong when you subject a vehicle of this age to prolonged high speeds (motorway)? What type of breakdowns could I expect? Am I being to hopeful that it will go smoothly?

Bit of Info on the vehicle in question

    - new timing belt and kit

    - all new suspension

    - all new bushes

    - new track rods

    - full service

    - new front prop

    - 113,000 miles

Apparently according to my local specialist the transfer box has seen better days, but functions!

There is no support from the organisers when breakdowns occur, so I would like to try and anticipate any problems!

What are the most useful spares to bring?

    Many Thanks

    Sam

Of course it will do it i took my 200tdi 110 to the Balkans several times.

    Spares i took were

    Head Gasket+Manifold Gasket

    Water Pump

    LiftPump

    Wheel Bearings

    U/Js

    Alternator

Plus bits of hose, tape, wire, electrical bits

Parts are easily available in Croatia and Bosnia, though pricey compared to mthe UK

All i ever had to change in several trips were a Lift pump.

  11. Usually it's a sign that the alternator diode pack has died. Disconnect the small brown/yellow wire from the alternator, if the light goes out then its a faulty diode pack. The diode pack is inside the alternator, it can be repaired/replaced but it's normally cheaper to get a replacement alternator.

Definitely agrre with the above its happenned to me before, new alternator was cheaper than a diode pack.

  12. hi any advice about tents good ,bad .Also supplers good ,bad etc thanks.

    Hi,

I have the 1.4 Ezi Awn on my 110, have used Ezi Awns for years and personally think they are the best on the market, mine has been used in tropical thunder storms, to dust storms in the desert. Never had any problems that it has not stood up to, all zips etc are still as good as new, it gets used for 10 weeks a year, plus odd weekends in the UK.

The only fault i have ever had with these tents are the covers, they have all split on at least one of the corners, but nothing that a bit of gaffer tape has not sorted out.

We tried a Maggiolina a few years ago for a season but hated it with a passion after the Ezi Awn, yes it was simple to put up and the ability to leave your bedding inside was a great bonus, but very limited space compared to the Ezi Awn especially if you need to get in with wet/muddy clothing, nowhere to put it out of the way as the tents not long enough. Plus it takes up all of your roof rack hardly any space left for all the other carp i like to carry etc.

A few years ago we were in Africa in extreme weather (thunder storms very high winds etc), anyway their were 5 Land rovers all with tents on top, at the end of the storm the only tents that were left were 2 Ezi Awns and a Hannibal, a Brownchurch and another make (cant remember name) basically were blown apart.

As for suppliers they will pretty much all be the same with warranty etc, buy at a show if possible they usually have better prices especially at the bigger shows on the last day.

  13. you can make one up using normal female spade connectors and a 12v cigarette lighter plug and lead - just connect the spade connectors directly to the terminals on the fridge - you will need to work out which terminal is pos and neg, can't remember offhand but I've done this before when I forgot the lead on a camping trip. Not sure if the standard lead has a filter/voltage smoothing function, seems to look like it, so maybe only do this if you are using a seperate leisure battery, though I would have thought a fridge motor could handle a few volts in either direction anyway without harm?

This is the way i will go if i cannot get a connector, standard lead has no voltage smoothiong function.

  14. Hi All,

Have a Engel fridge 35L model, anyway i need a new DC power lead as i have placed mine somewhere very safe

Does anybody know where i can get a plug from that i can wire up, i simply refuse to pay £33-50 for one from the dealers thats sodding extorionate for a bl--dy plug with a cig lighter plug on the other end which i would not use anyway, have looked at maplins on line and no joy.

  15. i fitted a new rubber donut (bearmach) to my 300 tdi disco 2 months ago and now it has started to split and distort

should i change to the 200tdi uj type prop

my car has a small lift of about 1 inch

surely the donut should last longer than that ive only done about 200 miles since fitting

Take it off and take it back where you got it from for an exchange under warranty etc . Genuine ones will last for ages even with lift of a couple of inches. Usually Bearmach stuff is okay, but definitely take it back and get a new one.
