  1. Hi,

Not done a 90 but have done a 110, i think you have 2 options buy a very nice but expensive part from Ashcrofts about £450+VAT (v8 50th console).

Or if you can weld ali or know a man that can get one made up tunnel housing all in one thats what i did, made out of chequer plate, made it first in thin plywood then cut the ali fired up the tig and done.

Somewhere in the forum are a couple of pictures ogf various made up housings, and occasionally you get a ashcrofts console on ebay.

If i was to do it again i would buy a new console from Ashcrofts.

  2. wander lead socket can be fitted where you want it, just extend the wires between it & the solenoid pack,

I fitted my Husky remote sockets 1 above each headlight. you can se them on this photo below,

    Thanks

Do you know where i can get a remte socket from?

  3. Hi All,

I have a X9 winch that is going to be fitted to the 110 basically if i fit the solenoid pack under the bonnet, out of the way can i fit the wander lead connector somewhere else so i can get at it without popping the bonnet? as all of the X9s i have seen have the solenoid pack fitted near the winch on the bumper any ideas photos etc greatly appreciated. plus all ideas in simple terms as my knowledge of winch wiring is limited,

  5. hi all any one know where i can get a cheapish recon gearbox for my 98 disco 300 tdi manual??

have looked at ashcroft.s )would be my first choice as never heard a bad word against them) and its approx £500+vat + £350 exchange surcharge and thats more than i can afford right now :(

so any one know of any cheaper places???

    rob

    Hi

    You have 3 choices

    Ashcrofts

    Ashcrofts

    or even Ashcrofts

Failing that would rather take my chance with a unit from a scrapper than one of the so called re-con jobs that are on the market.

  6. See i was right adults came along and answered the question, though i did think the figure of 48Kw was a bit over the top.... But i use it in the workshop on a dedicated 16 amp supply and its fine. Anyway i have been looking at a 7KW generator so i may get that one or keep looking for something a bit bigger.

Thanks a lot to all who answered

    Keith

  7. Amps = power/voltage

so 200=power/240 (presuambly, not three phase is it?)

    so 200 x 240=power

    =48,000 watts, or 48Kw

theres a catch though, whats the input power, not the welding power?

Oh god now i`m even more confused  , yes its 240v and its err a Mig

  8. Ok got me some new shocks but not sure how to get the old ones off. Mainly the bottom nut, I assume you are meant to hold the shock on the small flat part of the threaded stem to stop it spinning the whole shock body and then use a big spanner to undo the nut. Sadly mine seems fairly well rusted up. Are there any tips, techniques or tools to make it easier?

    Help much appreciated :)

Ring spanner on nut, pipe grips on shocker and spin it of using the pipe grips, ring spanner will jam up against housing

    Simples peoples

or if you have one a gax axe, though i have always got them of with the pipe grips

  9. We have Runway Enduro tyres on the defender (came fitted) in 235/85/16, but every time we go out we seem to get fair size stones stuck in the treads which gives a very annoying "clack, clack ,clack" noise every revolution of the tyre, which drives me mad and ends up with me pulling over to lever them out!

i had BFG at's on my last defender and they never did this, is it just our tyres that are rubbish? i'd never actually heard of them before we got the vehicle...

In a way i'd like to replace the lot for some 33" AT's, but the ones on are brand new so it seems like a waste for now.

    any ideas?

Hi i have Enduros on my 2 discos, allways found them to be as good a budget tyre as you can get, in fact better than many i know of.

  10. As the title suggests, on my 90csw there is an underbody tray thingy that needs to be removed in order to carry out maintenance such as oil and filter changes etc.

Would it be a problem if i was to leave it off or does it actually do anything important rather that just collect crud?

    Many thanks in advance. :)

Bin is the best place for it

  11. Hmmmm,

Interesting: that as I have Engineer in my job title, and letters after my name, I could do the same? Engineer covers so many things these days, including those who fix washing machines to those who write computer programmes (and those lucky few who get to play with proper engineering all day :) )

  12. Hi guys, just a quickie to pick your brains.

Water pump went today, pulley wobbling about and threw off belt. Checked out Paddocks and they do both types. I read the Tech section on fitting and noted the possible probs with patterned parts.

Question. Is that the norm with that type of component? Used patterned on other stuff with no probs but if fit is paramount and they're notoriously a poor fit, OE sounds the sensible way to go.

Hate to sound like a cheapskate as the difference is only a tenner but......a tenner is a tenner, or a tube of Tiger mastic etc.

    Any guidance welcome

    Cheers

    Rob

Britpart water pumps are excellent if you enjoy changing them twice a week at least

  13. Hi ,

As a licensed Radio Ham, i have been stopped several times while using hand held Microphones by the friendly plod, they have started off telling me its illegal etc, but have had to change their mind after discussions, and me producing my license, as i am allowed to operate mobile.

Have a bump or something and you will be charged with "driving without due care etc". My understanding is that as CB operators do not have a license which states they can operate mobile they are using them illegally while mobile, but a licensed Radfio Ham can use a CB as his license covers the operating frequencies or at least my old class A does, not sure about the myriad of ham licenses that are available today.

So there we are clear as sticky brown stuff.

  14. Really as title says,

I'm planning on going through Europe up to the top in to Russia, Mongolia and back in to deepest darked east Russia.

So the terrain from what I can see is going to be Road and desert with the mud here and there.

I was looking at something like the XZY but unless im looking in the wrong places they seem to have vanished form existence. If this is so, what should I be looking at as substitute?

    Thanks

I used to run XZYs on the 90, excellent but on the Disco i use BFG A/T also excellent.

  15. Would definitely say its time for you to learn to weld :o or

Find a friend who can for a few beer tokens  or

Pay a fortune in a commercial garage etc

Clean it all up and yes hit it with a hammer around the chassis find out how much actually needs replacing.

The outriggers are about £12 each and simple to do.

But if you intend keeping LRs then buy a good MIG and learn to weld, you will need it it the future, i hate to think what repairs would have cost me over the years if i had to pay a welder for every time i wanted something fixing. If you do get a MIG their are some good articles on the forum about them, all i would say is stay away from the gasless MIGs.

  16. All,

Given the current fashion in some quarters for relatively long slow low temperature cookery, I want to try cooking on the TDi manifold as part of expedition preparation. Tom Sheppard does not mention it in my 2nd edition, so I was wondering:

Anyone have any consistently successful recipes ?

Anyone know of any cooking containers which can easily and reliably be fixed into the available space ?

Are there any tried and tested do's and don'ts ?

    Regards

    Richard

Done similiar to this loads of times on the 300tdi Disco, small wire basket attached where the air con pump would be, throw in army ration in (foil bag),

couple of hours later piping hot food.

  17. ok here goes are the engine mounts in the same place? i know the v8 90 engine mounts are set further forward than a 200tdi 90. also will the disco's intercooler and rad fit

    thanks

    Ian

Done it on a V8 CSW, you need to chop off the v8 mounts and fit 300 mounts, and yes i fitted the intercooler and rad off a Disco, the auto box oil cooler also fits with a struggle, but i intend changing mine and getting some new pipes made up.

  18. Hello all

Anybody got any advice on cleaning out my k&n airfilter? Its a drum type, which i assume is the standard style used on defenders. Its pretty damn mucky so im hoping it might help to improve my lacking mpg!

    Thanks

    Nick

ps i had a search but didn't find anything

Throw in bin, put a paper one in, bl--dy waste of time dont do what they are supposed to, horrible things.

  19. Hello their.........have just sold my 300tdi 90 with a view to upgrading to a toyota landcruiser or nissan patrol :o ........But to be honest i am struggling to sway away from landrover.........(300tdi van back)

Before making up my mind i just need to know a few things...........

I am thinking off spending more time in a place i love over in the alps.....and as most know their are lots of steep hills.......I intend to be taking some walkers to specific places to walk(funnily enough) and will be needing something to take all the gear leaving space in the vehicle for passengers...so a trailers in order(sankey or rapier).......

Wanting to get something with some more comfort and power to take all this i thought of the toyota and nissan......which are very powerful trucks.....able to tow and carry just about anything......

now i am aware that the towing power in a landrovers about the same..but pulling that weight up very steep hills all day the landy may struggle??????????By the way i am thinking of the 300tdi as the td5 seems to have issues with cracking manifolds and the 300tdi seems to be bullet proof......

So can anyone tell me that i am wrong for a start......

next if i am wrong and you think that a defender 300 tdi would be able to cope.......what safe power upgrades can you do to a 300tdi without compromising the reliability to much.....

    thanks :D

I frequently tow a 3.5 ton twin axle trailer fully loaded across europe to Bosnia with a 300 tdi Disco, never had a problem, fitted a larger intercooler (Allisport) and tweaked the fuel pump which made a difference. Yes some of the long hills are a bit of a drag, but i will stick with the 300tdi, nothing computerised to foul up.

    Regards

    Keith
