  1. Transmission chap told me the piston inside the gearbox probably has a hairline crack in it and is losing hydraulic pressure causing the gears to not change smoothly. Apparantly a common problem on the Jatco auto. They can do the work in situ but want £800!! If they need to strip the box down the bill will be £1800-£2000 plus VAT!!! Anyone want to buy a cheap Freelander??!!
  2. How do you check the Viscous Coupling if it isn't on the car? I have the chance of one from a breaker but the vehicle has a broken diff so is putting doubt in my mind what caused the diff to break in the first place.
  3. New update - wife on the way back from Truro shopping and the rear diff exploded! Is this the cause of the clonky change or is the gearbox with a clonky change caused the diff to blow?
  4. takin it to a specialist transmission place tomorrow. He said he'll test driveit and see whats on - told me I'd waste £100 changing the oil as it rarely solves the problem. He said they suffer from a hairline crack in the piston in the box and it loses pressure. This makes it drop out of 5th and kicks down to 4th which is what it does. Normally lose reverse too. I'll post the results tomorrow....
  5. I bought a freelander td4 auto station wagon on a 51 plate last night at auction. Went a bit mad really. Looks ok and engine sweet at 118k, gearbox changes gear but 1st to 2nd or maybe 2nd - 3rd (might be both) when kicking up and down it can be quite violent!!! Not smooth at all! Would it be a worn out gearbox or need bushes or bearings or what? Or as daft as an oil change? Apart from that a few niggly things like the rear windows needing new regulators etc but thats about it. Dealer stamps to 98k plenty of receipts etc - Not bad for £1250 eh!!!!I'll try and get a pic of it to upload. Cheers guys
  6. If there's no drain plug do you suck the old stuff out or what?
  7. Cheers for that - did it yesterday and took about an hour - mainly because the left side has exhaust in the way and didn't have correct tools. Had to make do with a 10mm spanner as extensions to clear cat were wrong size!
  8. Took it to the garage today - needed two anti roll bar bushes and clamps - £5.10 each plus vat !! Picking them up later. Are they a hassle to fit? Last time I did new ARB bushes on a car they were difficult. Are these ones the split type or do I need to take ARB off completely?
  9. I have noticed that the anti roll bar has possibly moved as I can see a shiny part which is normally under the bracket is now 1" to the left. Could be fouling the body of the car when I hit a bump? What would allow the ARB to move over like that?
  10. Hi, My freelander has developed a clonking sound when going over speedhumps etc. Its only when the left front wheel hits. The noise comes from the centre / left of the car near the dash / gear selector area. I've looked under but everything seems okay no loose suspension etc. Wondered if the wishbone is worn or something. Also the left rear wheel makes a knocking sound in the hub when I shake it vigorously when it's parked. What do we think these could be? Cheers
  11. Think it was 05 on with the slightly different headlights. The only differences I can see are the lights, bumper and grille. Don't know if slam panel would be different. Would these fit on an earlier 01 model? I like the look of the updated ones.
  12. I bought the freelander I was on about in the previous posts - My wife calls it a Freeranger !! :P Just wondered if there was any way to stop laquer peel in its tracks - it's on the front wing around the ES badge as in picture.
  13. So is a worn steering wheel a common thing on these then?
