  1. Joseph Lucas, probably the man most responsible for the collapse of the British motor industry. How could one man (or company) undo 100 years of successful innovation?

This was how he did it:

Lucas signed a deal with Bosch,Delco, Ducellier, Magnetti Marelli etc agreeing that they they would not compete in each other's home market. Lucas signed a deal with the only other British competitor (Smiths) that they would not compete in each other's market.

Now Lucas had a complete monopoly, if you manufactured cars or motorbikes from the late 50's onwards you could only buy from the Prince of Darkness. The export markets died along with the motor industry.

  2. I agree in principle that the correct fuses should be in place. Although you should bear in mind that fuses are there to protect the wiring not the bulb/motor etc.

From experience I have often found that washer motor fuses are often rated low - about 5A and that it is worth moving up a bit (7.5A). Other than that I would stick to original specs.

  3. For the non-professional the brand does not make a lot of difference, it seems that most of the cheaper ones are the same with different stickers on. The 4x4 one I have releases very quickly so is similar to the above ones mentioned and cost about 40 pounds.

  4. I don't think you can run an old lr and not be willing to sort out the "lucas, prince of darkness electrics" yourself. An auto electrician is around 80 pounds per hour.

You will have two types of problem in my experience, firstly bad earth and secondly the bodges by previous owners. Not difficult to sort but very time consuming.

  5. The safest way to change a wheel with the emergency kit found in most cars is on the road.

On a busy A road with an off side flat I wouldn't hesitate to call the traffic police. The likes of ATS who replace truck tyres on the road are supposed to do this for all off side wheels, the only hassle is that they may not be able to turn up for a long time.

  6. The unladen weight of a disco 1 is around 2100kgs which is about the capacity of a 2600kg trailer, so not much to spare there.

If your disco has a roll cage and winches you will soon be up to needing a 3000kg trailer.

There are other factors to consider apart from weight: number of axles, flatbed or sides, tilting body or ramps, length of loadspace etc.

  7. Yup

Who is this person called Bige?

  8. DELL XT2 XFR, had mine a few months now, you can pick em up from eblag with DELL warranty, mine has 5Gb RAM, 64GB Solid State hard drive, runs Windows 7 and is my carryaround office.

Would not be without it even in this iPad world.

Great bit of kit. Never seen them below £1200 so not that cheap.

  9. Virtually any laptop/tablet/netbook/umpc wil do the job. How much you want to spend is the first question.

I have a couple, one a military spec tablet running W2K with a 10" screen, the other a 5" ulramobilepc running windows 7. The umpc has a windscreen mount which makes life loads easier.

  10. I cannot spot any very obvious MOT failures from the pictures, have you been to see it then? What will it fail on? Did the engine sound OK?

I suppose there might be sharp edges on the rust patches...

    Chris

I think the fact that you can see the grass through the holes in the footwell would be a start...
