  1. Hi all, Having a leaky steering box in my disco, I decided to purchase a BN steering box, not a reconditioned one. It took 9 moths to complete other mayor/minor fixes/mods in the disco until I put the car in the road again. But after two weeks of soft use, suddenly, the steering shows an extrange behaviour, as there is (almost) no play in the center, but moving the steering wheel you can feel how the freeplay increases as you turn the wheel to the end (both ends). All track rod ends are new, and all the play is located solely in the steering box. The box is tight in its place, and the car drives really fine in the road (I haven't the time to test it off road). Do you know why this might be happening? Do you think that this steering box was a poorly recon one, rather than a BN (I live in Spain, so this wont be a surprise for me, you know what happens at these lattitudes) . Any way to fix it ? At least does not leak (crossing fingers) Regards, Carlos.
  2. Hi, Two years ago I had an "accident" with a Hi-Lift and I ended with a bended 60" beam. Being unserviceable (micro-cracks in the bending point) I took a look in the web for Hi-Lift parts, and I found cheaper buying the beam in USA rather than doing it from an european supplier. The only disadvantage was (remember, two years ago) the fact that the only way to pay the beam was by money transfer to their bank in USA, and living in a small city in Spain this was a nightmare. But the beam finally arrived, and it is still doing its best ! Carlos P.D. "accident" means negligence. Hi-Lift jack is a very useful tool, but you have to concentrate on what you are doing with it.
  3. Hi minivin, Thank you for your answer. I have a BN R380 bought from Dave (great guy) last summer, but it's a pity to trow it in a LR that I'm planning to sell in medium-to-short time. Cheers, Carlos.
  4. Hi all, My early (may 94) R380 is suffering from the well known can't_change_from_5th_to_4th disease, and this easter I plan to remove the gearbox from the disco. According to the overhaul manual, first I have to remove the extension housing, centre plate, forks, etc... and then, and only then, I gain access to the 4th gear baulk ring. My questions are: can I substitute the baulk ring just removing front cover and gearcase ? can I stick out the input shaft or interferes with the layshaft ? Regards, Carlos
