  1. Thanks I was told by a local lucas CAV center that there is a mixture control screw somewhere on the pump (but he refused to tell me where) that controls the amount of fuel injected in per cycle (I thought this would be the throttle control to me!) If this does exist then I would be greatful to find it. Otherwise I will run some injector cleaner through it. My other thought was if a bit of muck did get through my cleaning of the pipe is is now partly blocking the injector and holding it open, and therefore allowing loads of fuel to leak through - does this seem feasable? Is it a DIY job to change the injectors or will then need resetting (if i just put new ones in as they are on £9 each compaired to £8 each for testing and cleaning!) Thanks James
  2. I have been having problems with my old 90 since I havd the under bonet jet washed by a local 'hand car wash'. After replacing the seals around the top spindles, and having the timing and cold starting re-adjusted by a local lucasCAV workshop it was all running perfectly, crussing at 75mph and doing 28-30 mpg, with no smoke at all. Unfortunalty it has all gone wrong again. Its now getting to 70mph at a push (by the wind and hill etc) producing white/blue smoke when starting up (always did but now doing so more) and doing about 7mpg around town, and 20mpg at 50 mph on the motorway. If you drive at 70mph you can litteraly see the fuel guage moving down! Torque seems unaffected as does the inital acceleration upto about 55, then its a bit more of a wait that it usualy is to do the climb to 65. I am guessing that the mixture settings may be out (i.e. running to rich) as it seems to be idling perfectly without any banging about etc. At this point I would like to point out that I have checked all the fuel lines and it is not just pumping the fuel out the bottom. The only thing that has happened recently is that I had to replace the front injector pipe as it snapped off in the usual place (i used a second hand one but flushed the pipe through with meths before I used it then allowed it to dry out completly and the filled it with diesel a few times before I put it on (helps it to start this way)) Any help would be apreciated before I have to purchase an oil well James
  3. Thanks Ill have a look at the fuel filter over the weekend - certain looks like its never been changed. As to mph I thought it was reading a bit high (as I have oversized wheels on), but I chekced it with the tomtom mph and it was reading corectly - obviously when you go up a hill/headwind it slows down. As to free fall i've not tried dropping it off a cliff - I suspect some body has somewhere and can give us an accurate figure, however as the new 110 i just had for a test drive will easily get upto 95-100mph (the dealer was a bit Mildly miffed of for me trying) I guess it could go faster if it had more power onboard! - perhapse land rover could have a go at compeating with the bugatti varon! - I guess they would need a solid fuel booster attached to it - atleast the suspension would take the weight!
  4. I got down to 8mpg at one stage in my 90 TD - I hooked a 4.5 tonne trailer to the back and headed off down the A12 at 65mph. - Try stopping that at the lights (if you work for the DVLA/police I did not do this BTW) It also depends on its mood 'see my other thread' in its good mood it will do 20-22mpg at 70mph, in its bad mood it will do 12mpg at 65mpg
  5. I thought it could be the lift pump, but when I reprimed the system there wwas significant pressure comming out of the bleed hole (sent a jet out that hit the bonnet lid when it was open) so I guess it was not that. As to mph I've had it upto about 85 at one stage (that was going down a hill - a very steep one) but when its in a good mood it will easily cruse on the flat at 70-75mph (with the turbo screaming like hell) The main problem is the difference in fuel usage between the two 'moods' it has (as well as the extra 10mph)
  6. I had exactly the same problem with mine, half way up the motor way, kept jumping out, and then eventualy got stuck (this time in low (I managed to pull it back into neutral with a lot of effort). I got a replacment box and went to get it fitted but it turned out that the problem was the bearing at the rear of the input shaft which caused it to slip back slightly on the splines and hence come out of alignment, and hence keep jumping out. Its realy simple to check, all you need to do is to remove the rear cover (you have to do this to take the box off properly anyway. Unfortunalty by being a bit forcefull in pulling it out of low i naped the selector fork (that was an expensive mistake!) The box has never sounded or run better, and after removing all the mud from around the lever it now goes into gear fully, and stays there as well. I think the chain of events is the same, mud building up over time stopping it going into gear fully, which then causes the bearing to wear out as the gears are slightly out of alignment. I would also recomend if you are replacing the bearing that you make sure you have a cross drilled shaft in its place as this allows the oil to circulate much more and hence reduces the temperature of the shaft and the bearing. - Having enough oil also helps
  7. I checked the glow pulgs off the battery. They heat up in about 10 seconds when connected directly to the battery, and the wiring seems good. When [i turn it to heat the interior light and the dash lights dim so I guess they are working. Ill have a look at the turbo pipe, and see if it is leeking. I think this is a problem between the turbo and the injectors as it seems that at full power the injectors can't keep up with the turbo if this makes sence? James
  8. Ive got an D reg 90 with the original 2.5TD engine. Ive recently had the turbo replaced by a bosch service centre. Since I got it about 5 months go i have had problems with intermitant power problems. It seems that when i accelerate hard it will only get up to aboout 65mph, but if i slowly feed in the power it will easily get up to 80mph going up a hill (unloaded). I have checked the turbo pipe as I was told this could be collapsing and preventing the turbo kicking it fully, but this does not seem to be the case. I have also recently replaced the seals on the injector pump top as these all went at the same time asfter having the engine bay jetwashed (don't do this I have read of many other people suffering the same problem) - I did this myself against the advice of everybody I talked to but it has fixed the masive fuel leak. However the problem remains that it just will not get going fast if I floor the throttle. One thing i have also noticed is that if i floor the throttle it accelerates very quickly, and then the turbo kicks in and off it goes again, but then just before maximum revs there is a sudden and abrupt reduction in power (I actualy slow down), which im guessing is what is causing the problem, but I am at a loss as to what is causing it? One thought was that the injectors were very dirty and it was getting to a point where the demand for fuel just could not be supplied by the injectors and hance the fall off in power. Another symptom I have also noticed is that when your cruising at 65mph after accelerating hard my foot is to the floor, while if you slowly feed in the throttle as it picks up speed then you only need your foot half way down to be doing 80mph up a hill (and the fuel economy reflects this -you can basicly see the fuel guage moving down when its in 65mph mode.) I should point out that it was doing this before i replaced the seals, but it has improved slightly after doing this. It also happened before the turbo was changed but no where near as much - the garage say the new turbo is working fine. Finally it is also have a significant problem starting up, needing a good 40-50 seconds of engine cranking, and at least 60 seconds of plug warming before it will start. I then chucks a huuge amount of white smoke out the back, and then settles down and ticks over perfectly. just one other word of warning to anybody who is thinking of attempting to replace the seals on the injector pump lid - tighten the locking nuct up on the tickover speed screm very tightly as I almost ended up hitting a telegraph pole when the screew rattled out and jamped the throtle wide open - second word of advice - don't do it your self unless you like spening eight hours trying to get it all lined up and all the leavers enguaging again - BTW they do now. Any help would be apreciated as I am going to be selling it very sson and i need to sort it out without spending a huge amount of money on it. BTW im looking at £2500 ONO for it if anybody is interested. D reg 90 with rear windows (converted hard top - no rear seats) new turbo, water pump, and recent transfer box rebuild (with cross drilled input shaft) extra wide wheels, and 6 extra front spots.
