  1. I Think the motor and/or gearbox is set to work more efficiently when motoring in than out (my x9 sounds significantly different motoring out than in) . Might be worth calling the winch manufacturer & check with them directly. Jon.
  2. Parts Catalogue RTC9932CE (1987 110) shows part 26 (ERR394, part of gasket kit STC363) .in the 200tdi section as Gasket Cover/Block. Perhaps this parts catalogue is showing old part numbers? Its the only parts catalogue i have for 200 tdi defender engines.(attached) Jon.
  3. the gasket is nothing special (part no ERR394)... but it is fitted between the block and the back of the timing cover (the part of the cover that the injection pump is connected to) If it had been removed in the past & the gasket not fitted then there would have been gasket compound on the tensioner bolt which would have mostly stopped the oil. The 200tdi engine does not have the extra pulley that the discovery 200tdi has (at least neither of mine did) & i am not sure if that is a possible place for oil to get in. Other things to check are the 2 o rings on the cam gear wheel retaining plate and any damage on the gear wheels where the seals run. Jon.
  4. Perhaps someone had the timing case off the block & failed to fit the small round gasket that seals the tensioner bolt? Did the tensioner bolt have gasket sealer on the thread? I had exactly this & had to strip it down further to rectify the problem (the gasket is not very obvious on the exploded diagrams in the service book) Jon.
  5. Just found these http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/380-LED-Bulbs/ Looks like a standard clear lens could be used with these for stop / tail. Anyone tried them? Jon.
  6. I Bought a 200tdi on ebay a while back as an upgrade to my tired turbo diesel engine. Came complete with ancillieries & put in in with no problems.... A year of so later it stared knocking on overrun & high(ish) revs & burning oil so time for a replacement / rebuild. A Friend had a 200tdi discovery with low miles but rusted out so thought better option would be to fit an engine with known millage etc. After much dismantling and rebuilding the ancillieries its in & running. However.... My original 200tdi did not have the breather from the cam area of the block to the rocker cover. The disco block plate would not fit because of the injector pump so i refitted the rocker cover without the front pipe fitting and the blanking plate on the block. Is this correct for a 200tdi? I have looked in the parts book & all the 200tdi engines appear to have this extra breather. I guess it will breath via the push rod tubes so it wont cause a problem... The other odd problem found when refitting was the oil cooler pipes end fittings were different on the 200tdi's & the disco pipes were to short so i had to change the oil filter housing over as well. Jon
  7. My 2.5td engine did similar & it was a split in the diaphram in the injector pump. This monitors pressure from the turbo & regulates fuelling accordingly. One of the ways to tell was pressure in the fuel tank (slight hiss when cap released). Mine managed to do it on the Fowey Ferry, tons of smoke & unburnt fuel out the exhaust, managed to stuff it in gear brakes on & stop it. I assume the 200 / 300 tdi could suffer a similar problem. Jon.
  8. I Have secured the discovery 200 tdi engine, the above mentioned changes look simple (manifolds & flywheel housing)... but ... the timing casing change scares me a little ... It looks like i will need to remove the cam belt, pulleys etc. Is it an easy job to replace them & without altering the engine timing. Will any special tools help or is it simpler than it appears. Thanks Jon.
  9. I Have a 110 2.5td, some time ago i upgraded to a defender tdi engine, rad intercooler etc with no problems. The engine is now quite tired, burning some oil & a nasy knocking at high revs and especially on overrun. The gearbox is ok but has quite high millage. A friend has a 200tdi discovery with a good engine & recoditioned gearbox available for a good price. Is it a straight swap (apart from manifolds & temperature sensor) or are there any advantages with swapping other parts from the defender gearbox / engine? Also will turbo from the disco engine fit onto the defender manifold? Thanks. Jon.
  10. Does anyone happen to know the part number for the exhaust to engine bracket? Thanks Jon
  11. Thanks. Over to a friends this weekend to modify the broken clamp & bolt it back on the block. Jon
  12. Having put a defender 200tdi in my 2.5td 110 all has generally been well. Everything just connected up (even the electrics), had to modify the pipes to the heater a little though. But ... With the standard 2.5td exhaust downpipe, i am still using, the bracket where it bolts to the engine was a little broken so its not bolted to the engine & nothing looks like it will align. Since conversion the pipe to the manifold clamp connection keeps pulling out, i have adjusted as best i can the rest of the exhaust to minimize any leverage on the joint. I think its a different down pipe on a 200tdi from a 2.5td Does the 200tdi down pipe clamp to the engine? Anyone have any pictures or info on this problem. I am not sure of the age of the 200tdi but it was from a 90. Thanks all. Jon
  13. Forgot to say in original post all the bit are from a defender not a discovery. Thanks for all the info, now i will schedule an engine out a little later in the summer & order (if there available) a set of tdi rad mounts. Jon
  14. Ok, more fool me ..... I bought a 200 tdi to replace the ailing 2.5td lump in my 110. It was cheap with rad / intercooler & frame, air box, pipes etc & new starter & alternator with the discription excellent condition, "rattles" at high revs. Didnt strip it before fitting, 2 days hard work removing the 2.5td lump, put the tdi in, made the mods to heater pipes, new throttle cable, bodgeified the original top rad mounts (for now) checked the loom plug (same connections ), primed it on the lift pump, turned the key & it instantly fired to life well thats the good bit ... its got a bottom end issue ... i have ordered a set of big end & crank bearings ... but is it possible to do anything with the engine in? I have read a post about getting the bottom end brace frame thingie out in a disco with the engine in but most mechanics i talk to say not possible in a defender? Anyway gonna drop the sump at the weekend and have a look. so ... 1. Is it possible to change the main / big end's with the engine in? 2. Will some 110 tdi rad mounts solve the top rad mount issue (they wont clear the bolts holding the frame together so only using 2 back bolts atm & i can only secure the brackets with 2 bolts) 3. Do i need to drop the rad in height? The cowl fits clean to the viscous fan so if i do then the engine will need to drop as well 4. is a 2.5td exhaust manifold the same as the tdi (looks identical & was wondering if i could have used the 2.5td manifolds on a disco tdi) any help with this project most welcome. Jon
