just had another look, and a drive with the middle seat out.
The noise sounds like it's coming from either the transmission brake, or at least somewhere between that and the rear diff. The rear diff is very oily, but there is no noise coming from it (i'll get the garage to look at the diff seals before the MOT)
Could it just be that the handbrake is worn or something loose inside? When in neutral, with the handbrake off there is a fair few inches of play in the big drum ( i can move it three or four inches either way by hand)
What do you think?
Thanks

damn, all of a sudden tonight this has got ten times worse :-(
Also there is a really low 'grinding' type noise coming from the rear - diff?
I'm not mechanically minded really so unless this sounds like a common problem, i suppose i better book it into the garage.
Thanks

cheers guys, can someone give me a crash course on how to check fluid levels and which types of fluids to use to re-fill?
Will try and get the jack out and have a crawl around tonight.
Thanks again.

I know a lot of people hate these threads as it could be so hard to determine a problem from a description, however hopefully someone can point me in the right direction...
When coasting, or chaging gear, of if running in the wrong gear (and the engine begins to 'stutter'), a loud metallic rattle can be heard. It sounds like it's coming from under the drivers seat, but it's hard to tell as it is only audible when moving!
There seems to be no other factors, speed, bumps, brakes, steering etc do not affect it, only on coasting, gear changes or if running in the wrong gear.
Can you help? MOT is due in two weeks, so need to get this sorted asap.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

so is a 1993 disco motor likely to a 1993 defender? The wiring looks the same, but not sure about the mounting of it....

My passenger seat runner has snapped near the rear mounting.
I know I could try the scrappers, but I was wondering if Paddocks or the like sell new ones?
I couldn't find them on the website.....
Thanks

shame more cant join us :-(
I'm not sure of the route to be honest, i'll be following others!

dont think i've much chance of finding somewhere local to replace the bushes tbh.
Is a disco one of the same year likely to be identical?
Like this one?

PI room or me please....

cheers john, you're right. I've got it all back together in the correct order, with the brass square bits touching the inner round copper bit on the shaft. Still no joy. I can hear a very faint clicking when it's powered up, but there is no movement.
Oh well, now i'll have to track down another one :-(

this really is an impossible task - surely!?
How else can I do it? Tried wire, long nose pliers etc.
Any advice very much appreciated!

Damn!
I'm probably the most impatient person on this planet!!
nevermind, will have a go....

ok, still no joy.
i've now got power to the motor but it's having none of it.
I removed the motor and dis-assembled it all. I see the two square pieces of copper have become dislodged. Where do they fit back in?
Could this be the cause of the problem, or could the motor be fudged? How can I tell?
Many thanks

My rear wiper doesn't work - it hasn't done since I've had it.
I put a meter on the motor - nothing. i put the meter on the switch - nothing.
Fuse is ok, what else could I check? Is this a common failure?
Thanks
Pre MOT check - bad news :-(

OK, whilst the landy was in the garage, I asked them to do a pre MOT check.
Here's a list of work which needs doing, they've priced it at £800 - £1000.
*Front Radius Arm Bushes
*Front discs and pads
*Brake pipe corroded on rear axle
*Damp brake backplate on rear brakes (?)
**Rear brake pinion seal needs replacing
*Wheel bearings need adjusting
Headlight refelctors corroded
The * items are what I need help with - are they fairly simple DIY jobs or am I best to pay the money for the garage to do it? If DIY, which parts should I order from paddocks as I need to sort this asap.
Thanks
