markwindsurf
OK the more practical solution, have modified the front end to make it more practical to install a head light and replaced the full over engine cross braces with a diagonal chassis tie to take some of the load. One thing also to remember is the analysis is comparitive and as such the deflections you are seeing detailed as 4mm in this case should be taken with a pinch of salt, as the initial loading assumption of 2 ton at 7mph is in reality an impossible impact on the structure as due to the complexity of modeling car impact the frame has been rigidly anchored and the tree hits the cage with a weight of 2 tons at 7mph at exactly 45 degree to the corner. It does not cater for mud or glancing blows the impact deflection by other parts of the vehicle etc. In short the images show the loads in the frame but the value of the load will be incorrect, for example the young's modulus ( point at which the the deformation goes from elastic to plastic or becomes a permanent bend )of steel is 2.5e+008N_m2, and should be treated more as design evolution rather than an exact science, it would take too long to set the model up in a real world situation.
