Comical Engineer
Having solved my thermostat problem, next on the list is the non-functional rear wash / wipe. Basically, neither the wash nor the wiper are working at all. I've done the obvious and checked the fuse (which is intact) but I'm not sure about the functioning of the switch or whether there is a relay involved. Any help gratefully received! First_Fleet
N plate means nothing to me, but some of the facelift D1 Discoverys ('94 MY) would not allow the wiper to operate if the driver's door is open. It didn't seem to affect the washer operation though.
spud murphy
The wash wipe amongst other things is contolled by the Multi Function Unit. This can be placed in a diagnostic mode if I recall and will power the various circuits when differant buttons are pressed. Cant remember how you get to diag mode though. Anyone shed any light? First_Fleet
This the one? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Circuit Operation, Multi-Function Unit The multi-function unit (MFU) is mounted on the rear of the passenger compartment fusebox and has an input to operation of the following: Heated rear screen Heated front screen Courtesy lights Side and headlights Rear fog guard lamps Headlamp power wash Front wipers Rear wash/wipe Testing. ================================================== ======== Close all doors and the tailgate. NOTE: If the oil pressure switch goes open circuit (engine is started) during the following procedure, the MFU will exit the diagnostic mode immediately. Press and hold the heated rear screen switch and switch on the ignition. Release the heated rear screen switch within 2 seconds and the MFU will beep to indicate that it's in diagnostic mode 1. Press the heated rear screen switch; the MFU will beep twice. In turn, operate each of the following switches, heated front screen, rear fog guard lamps, side lights, headlights, front wiper, and rear wiper. The MFU will beep twice each time a switch is operated. Pressing the heated rear screen again will cause the MFU to enter diagnostic mode 2. The MFU will provide outputs to the following in order given below: Heated rear screen relay energized for 2 seconds Heated front screen energized for 2 seconds Courtesy lights energized for 2 seconds Dim dip relay energized for 2 seconds Rear fog guard lamp energized for 2 seconds Headlamp power wash energized for half a second Front wiper energized for half a second Rear wipe/wash energized for half a second The MFU will then exit the diagnostic mode. spud murphy
Yep thats the one! Must try mine now. Cheers
Comical Engineer
First, Thanks for that. I've now established that the wash is working. (Having cleaned out the jets with a pin and pointed them at the screen helped massively). Now it's just the wiper. Diagnostics beep says that there is power to the switch, so I'm going to work backwards starting with the relay. Is removal of the rear door panel as simple as it looks? I'm assuming removal of the remains of the door pocket and the speaker housing will allow me to just pull the panel straight off?
First_Fleet
You ideally should use the correct forked tool to lift at each plastic fastener point so you don't bust them. If you can use something similar well & good. A piece of suitable ( ie. with some strength) flat metal with a V cut into the end should suffice, & just place the V around the pin & lever carefully. You can get new pins. Mine are red & the side doors are black. I assume you did try my original suggestion? Close the door & try?
Comical Engineer
I assume you did try my original suggestion? Close the door & try? Yes thanks, door closed and trucking along the M6 in the rain Must admit I would not have thought of it otherwise though! Checked the switches in the test mode of the MFU and got the beeps but no action from the rear. I've got the bit of metal somewhere that I used to use to remove the ones from my MG Midget - I guess it's the same sort of fitting!
First_Fleet
Not familiar with the MG ones but the LR pins are just a barbed pin, so possibly. Hint: Wipe a smear of light grease on each pin before reinserting in the door.
