TomG
Am in the process of swapping the transfer box on my 90 for a Disco one (used the long bolts tip from the tech archive - superb!). On both boxes I noticed a dark red greasy substance on the splines of the input gear, is this a special lube which helps reduce wear? The new box has a cross drilled input shaft which looks good condition, spline on the gearbox output shaft looks slightly worn but i'll just run it, i've cleaned everything up for reassembly but should I re-grease the splines or can i just clart on some EP90? Phil Hancock
Its not grease but a mix of oil and fretted splines.
TomG
Thanks Phil, the thought did cross my mind.. I don't think the Disco box was long rebuilt, earlier i took the input gear out and slid it over the gearbox shaft and no noticable play. I'll douse it in gear oil and run it. Les Henson
Fit a cross-drilled input gear - they are only about £40. Les.
