I think my last reading on my dipstick the level has gone up, would i be right in thinking the lift pump may be at fault.

300 tdi auto 98

No ...

Is it possible that you took your first reading when the engine had settled for a short period, say half an hour, and the last reading when it hd settled over night ?

Diesel does enter the oil, but if its a large amount quickly then normally there are other more obvious signs to notice like the engine running carp.

Only way derv can get into a tdi sump is through the lift pump, rub the oil between your fingers and smell it.

TDI are a painto check the oil on best way is to let it stand overnight.

200 even harder takes an age to drain and settle
