Boro
How difficult is it to remove a manual gearbox/transfer box from a 1995 disco 300 tdi with the engine still in situe? i have a feeling the crankshaft oil seal may be leaking as the bottom of the gearbox is covered in clean engine oil (recently changed the engine oil) unless its tracking there from somewhere else, will it do any harm to leave it alone for a while (keeping an eye on levels of course) to save up some pennies for some other parts to change at the same time such as clutch, slave cylinder and gearbox seals etc, good solid vehicle just lots of things that need doing
Les Henson
You can either remove the gearbox entirely from the vehicle, remove the engine, or slide the gearbox back far enough to do the work you mention (removal of the clutch, flywheel, and replace the gearbox shaft seal and crankshaft rear main bearing oil seal. As long as the oil doesn't saturate the cluth, then it's not likely to get a lot worse very quickly. This thread is sliding the gearbox back to replace the clutch/fork. You only need to unbolt the flywheel to get at the crank rear seal. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=6719 Les.
Boro
Cheers for the link les, tbh the gearbox has a crunch on 2nd and now a very slight crunch on 3rd sometimes so im wondering about pulling it apart whilst its out and replacing anything that needs doing or i wonder what a recon box what run to hmmmm
DiscoStu
A lot of R380's crunch on 2nd, try an oil change before a recon would be my advice. The oil sold by Difflock has a good reputation. Mine crunches on fast changes so I try to avoid them
