Paul64
I have been searching the forum for details on steering conversions for a mate wanting to convert a RHD to LHD Defender. I have done a search on this as I am sure I have read about this on here before. He is interested in cost and main technical requirements. Can someone point me in the right direction, especially on searches. I used steering+conversion+left+right. Cheers Paul
6cyltdi
You will need a different steering box, and depending on how neat you want it a LHD dash, I just modified the dash I had to suit (in a series 3) You'll need a new dials panel... Depending on what year your car is you may need a different swivel... I think everything else should be OK, oh inner wing might possibly need kinked for the steering column.. What about wiring? Would the conversion require a new loom?
Brucey
Thanks for that. What about wiring? Would the conversion require a new loom? This depends largely on what vehicle it is. I converted my 2004 Td5 Defender and it needed a full loom, I guess because of all the electrickery . It is also a completely different Aircon kit also (if relevant). It was a lot more work than I expected, so in the end I gave up and got Foley Specialist Vehicles to do it. Chris
6cyltdi
No you can use the same loom and push it through the holes at the other side of the bulkhead once the rubber grommets have been removed....
6cyltdi
Three pics Here... You can see that i just cut the dash that was in to suit...
Paul64
Thanks for all the comments. I will pass them on. Request came from an American, although I am pretty sure he will have bigger problems than a conversion. I am sure I read somewhere that there are problems exporting 2nd hand 4x4's to the states and that most people were put off from Land Rovers because of it. I can't remember whether it was a build spec requirement or tax? Cheers, Paul
orange rover
i converted a 1996 200td from rhd to lhd the following parts were needed: steering box panhard rod bracket holding steering damper on steering arm swivel housing RH LHD power steering hoses brake pipes bracket holding handbrake window wipers tube motor to wheel box LHD light assemblies complete dash instrument binacle spedometer heating box hoses heating box clutch hoses quite a few bits, expensive when bought new. went to a breaker and got all the parts, most difficult bit was the swivel housing. i went there: http://www.rangeroverrecycling.nl/english/ he has a whole yard full of land rovers of all sorts and ages. found a lhd defender from the same year and got all the bits from it. lhd conversion sounds easy but actually is quite a bit of work
