A flat plate would be considerably weaker (unless it's 6mm thick :) )

It would also cavitate, which is why it's ribbed :ph34r:

I know people have used 3-4mm ally chequer plate, and as long as the support struts are there and the plate is riveted/screwed to them, it works ok.

There has been quite a few posts about this and the general opinion (and that of MOT testers) was that you can't really replace it with a rivited in sheet of Ali, but quite a few people have done and have got away with it.

I think the main reason came down to any repairs within 30cms of the seatbelts mounts (which obviously the rear floor is) have to be repaired to original standard. So if it was spot welded then a new floor should be welded in not riveted. If it's a patch (ie not 100% of the panel) then it needs to be seam welded.

Whether it really matters or not is up to you.
