Max Series-3
My series three has 'ran out of fuel' twice in last week and i've come to refill the next day and it won't start. The battery has gone flat so what other options do i have to start it bump doesn't work for some reason and jump start nooo! So is a hand crank a viable option? Thanks Max
Les Henson
You can prime the system on the lift pump - there's a lever on it for this. Petrol engine - pump until it goes slack - the carb float chamber is then full and the float valve closes - stopping more fuel from going in. Diesels are a bit more complex and although the lift pump still has a primer lever on it - you can only bleed it so far (to half of the injector pump). Cranking or towing is the only wat to get fuel to the injectors. Les.
mickeyw
I'm not sure I would want to entertain hand cranking a series diesel. However I did spend an entire winter hand starting my 2.25 petrol 'cos I had no money for a new starter motor. It normally started 2nd or 3rd pull, even from cold, and without any priming of the carb. If you plan to do this here's a tip - don't park too close to the car in front. Starting handles are very long! Michael
