DefcoL
as per title should I attempt to rebuild or just get another box........... My steering has suddenly become very very lose, so lose that I will not drive it. quick fix would be to replace, but I like the idea of a rebuild, it seems as though the sheer pins may have gone. Firstly is this possible without having to machine the unit? and if so are there kits available? conversely; any recommendations for a replacement box will be appreciated TIA Lawrence
disco_al
have you adjusted the preload on it? it's on the rave cd's somewhere. also have you checked the drop arm joint/track rod ends? price wise - rebuilt units can be had for about £120 exchange from memory, 2nd hand ones anything from £50 upwards. (got a used 4 bolt disco PAS box here - £40 plus postage?)
FridgeFreezer
Have you investigated the cause of the sudden looseness? Could be all sorts of things that aren't the steering box.

Hi fridge, quick ans is yep, I have been checking/ watching it for some time due to the s/wheel on the odd occasion deciding to change its set position by a few degrees. ujs/ballpoints/drop arm splines/ wheel bearings.... all OK .
