rusty_wingnut
My front diff seems to have a lot of play on the pinion shaft. Is this a case of replace the bearing or is something I can adjust out?
Ex Member
Most likely a bearing is gone. Check first that the pinion nut is not loose. If it is tight, you have a bad bearing.
Les Henson
The pinion is pre-loaded. If the nut is loose then you might get away with re-pre-loading it, but once the bearing has been like that for a while - it's time to rebuild or replace the diff. 4 bearings in the diff - all taper roller and not that expensive to buy, plus the cover gasket.and shims. Setting the pre-load to factory spec is time consuming (unless you get lucky), doing it by feel is quicker and usually just as effective. Les.
