SHAVED_GORILLA
Are r380 gearboxes different in the same way as LT77's? I would like to put a 300tdi and r380 from a gearbox from a disco into a 90. Anything else I should consider like engine mounts and gearbox x members. Would it be easier to fit Defender lt77 and a 300tdi? Andy
ciderman
Andy you may get a few pointers in the right direction from here http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=37643

What I need to know is wether a disco box will work though? thats the main thing so I can buy a whole disco to break if it does. I havent done the deal for the 90 yet but trying to work out how much it will cost. Andy
TheRecklessEngineer
I did this with my 90. The gearbox cross member will be fine, as will the propshafts. You will need an R380 from a 90 though - a disco won't have the gearshift in the right place and is a PITA to change. New chassis engine mounts will be needed. The only clearance issue is between the viscous fan and steering box. You can either trim the fan slightly, or just remove it and fit electric if you must. Get a Tdi power steering hose for the pump to box. Remove the electrical harness from your old engine and fit it to the TDi - then it is plug and play. Exhaust may require some ingenuity - I just got a downpipe and fixed it to the remainder of my TD system. That is all I can think of for the moment... bluespanner
I have a disco r380 in my 90, it shunts the engine right forward, and the sticks end up right at the back of the aperture in the tranny tunnel. I use the standard disco stick and people comment on how nicely placed my gearchange is.
SHAVED_GORILLA
I had thought about moding the sticks ie lengthen slightly and maybe an s bend. I can make a new tunnel piece. Andy
TheRecklessEngineer
The gearstick length is the only problem with using the disco R380 - if you are feeling adventurous, go for it! Will need piccies though! I chose to use a defender R380 as it was the first time I had done anything major mechanically, so I chose to keep it as simple as possible.
