Mark Smith
Hi All. I am hoping someone will be able to give me some advise. I have a 2002 Disco TD5 and as I am sure you aware, this specific model came out with traction control but no center diff lock (not one of Land Roves best ideas) and unfortunately when I bought my Disco, I didn’t do enough research and bought the first on that I could find in good condition. She now has just over 300 000 km on the clock and understandable the ABS (and three amigo’s) are giving problems as the hubs are worn. I am not willing to spend 30K on new hubs and don’t have a problem with the handling so I am happy to right off the ABS but would like to add a center diff lock. I also want to change my tyre size to 235/85/16 to give me some lift (already have a 2” lift kit in) My question is, 1. Should I use a defender transfer box (using this tyre size) or stick to a disco's? 2. Is there any way to replace the wheel bearings (I think I know the answer to this as I have already tried) 3. Can I change the differentials for somthing which is easir to maintian for less that it would cost to replace all four hubs. I look forward to any advise that you may have for me. BogMonster
OK 1) Yes a Def tbox would work and give you difflock too if you link it up 2) Not that I know of but they aren't £30k as far as I know thats a bit steep even by LR standards 3) Why are you changing the diffs? They are std 2 pin 24 spline Rover diffs the same as a Defender 90 has fitted.
Mark Smith
Hi Bob Yes, £30k would be a bit steep but that is because I forgot to say I am in SA not the UK. Works out to about £2000 by the time I have shipped the parts to SA. Regarding the diffs, there is nothing wrong with them, just dont feel like going though all this again in another 300 000km and was wondering if there was a cheaper solution but I guess by then I will have a Disco III. Monster
Just a thought.... So am i right in thinking the transfer box is the same as fitted to other LRs? I have a box from an older Range Rover. Will this be a straight swap? I have still to determine whether i have the mechanism there or a blank case. Well even to find out year and designation! Definitely a facelift model. If i have a blank case, can i just install bits from RR box to make Disco box lockable? Or I must i completely remove Disco box and install RR box? (or maybe even a defender box as i plan to fit larger tyres). Look forward to your comments. Cheers.
