TheSaint
Hi! I am about to instal new rear springs on my Discovery I and wonder what is up and down on the springs. Its H/D springs ANR4491 painted grey/brown on one end. The end with paint has a more tight wraps on 1/4 of the total spring. Should this be up or down? Hope I explained so you understand! Thank you in advance! Fredrik
tuko
Hej Fredrik, place the tightly grouped coils upwards. Todd.

TheSaint
But why should the tighter part be placed upwards?
cipx2
Functionally speaking, you can fit them which way round you fancy, as long as both springs are the same way round. Practically, if you fit them with the closer spaced coils at the bottom you increase the chance of mud/stones/etc accumulating inside the spring and on the plate which is not that desirable. ChrisW70
Plus it's a bit of a pita trying to get the spring retainer on when the coils are so tight together!
