wanderlust4ever
Can anybody give me a rough idea to how oil much a defender 130 tdi use's per 1000 mile. Just got back from a trip of 700 mile and had to put half a litre of oil in there. Is this normal ???? Many Thanks
Aragorn
A good (ie new) engine will use very little. Will probably go between service intervals without having to add much more than half a litre. However worn engines will use more. Most car manufacturers state that 1L of oil per 1000 miles is the limit of oil consumption, however in reality if the engines using this much its knocking on deaths door. Our 1.8T A4 uses about 1.5L between oil changes (5kmiles), which is approx 0.3L per 1000miles, and its done 186k. If its a high mileage engine then half a litre over 700miles is probably an indication that things are getting a bit worn, so keep an eye on the oil level. If its a relatively new engine then i'd be checking for oil leaks first before condemning the lump.

Seems a wee bit strange as the thing has only done 39kmiles. been underneath to look for leaks but nothing. Any other info on this matter. Many Thanks
Top90
My 300Tdi Defender used to use 0.25 litres between oil changes at 5,000miles. That was with 90,000 miles on the clock. Newer ones use even less. (that I've had)
BogMonster
A good (ie new) engine will use very little. Will probably go between service intervals without having to add much more than half a litre. Oddly the newest 300Tdis (the ones built in Brazil) use a lot more oil than older engines. My old red 90 (1995 model year) bought with 45k miles and sold with somewhere over 60k on, used not a drop between services, I never put any in. My last grey 90 (2004), and my current 110 (2006, now 10k miles), and the financial controller's 110 (2005, about 25k miles), all burn significant amounts of oil despite being much newer engines, I've not recorded it but probably a couple of litres between services. It is also something I've noticed in a number of newer (post 99MY) 300Tdis in company vehicles at work. No idea why.
Aragorn
Build tolerances not as good on the later engines?
BogMonster
Probably not. Bloody block has Industria Argentina cast into it so God knows what sort of lash up that is They don't seem to be any less reliable than older ones though, they just burn more oil.
