I got problems !!

Hi,

I think i have serious problems with my freelander td year 2000.

I have not owned it that long and knew i may need to replace the viscous bearing`s but upon inspection it looks like the viscous coupling has cracked...! I do not know how long its been like this.

The vehicle drives fine with just a slight noise and the only other noticeable things are that it "stiffens up" when the steering is on full lock and selecting reverse gear can be tricky but these problems i would class as minor when driving.

I now know of the problems that might be at stake here.

Can i replace the viscous coupling with a new one and hope the ird unit is ok or is it sods law that my ird unit is knacked also?

Need advice and help on this iam a novice.

Thanks

All Feelanders stiffen up on full lock, it's a characteristic of the vehicle and doesn't in itself show that there's a fault with the vehicle. best thing to do is using a paint pen, draw a line on the two parts of the VCU and drive some figure of eights and see if the lines still line up.

The IRD will only be knackered if there is some symptom, e.g. teeth in the IRD oil or whining, banging, ect coming from the transmission.

The marks need to be on the rotating parts of the transmission, so it's best to put them on the propshaft to make sure you don't dawb them on the non-moving parts!

on front and rear propshafts, if they line up you have a problem, if they don't your VCU is operating correctly.

Thanks egg n chips, i have done the tipex test, i put 2 level lines on each end of the propshaft went for a spin and checked, the lines are out of level by about 90 degrees about quarter of a turn.

So i guess it might be ok, but considering the smashed casing on the viscous coupling iam guessing i should replace it and put in a set of bearings also.

I was more concerned that the ird unit may be damaged but there is no evidence of this (me thinks) no bad sounds etc just a slight faint whining which may be coming from the bearing`s iam guessing.

So hopefully its not all bad..!

Sounds like everything is ok, VCU's are not cheap (around 300 quid i think) so I would only replace it if it's not operating. If it aint broke, don't fix it!!!.

Thanks egg n chips, i got incontact with a place i found on the tinternet called bell engineering (specialists in freelanders vcu ird diffs etc) they said same as you that it might not be that bad and just replace the vcu. They supply recon vcu`s for 215 squids as long as they take your old one to recon.

thanks 4 the help
