gelf
Basicly what controls a TD5 rev counter? trigger wheel? I have a mate with a VW camper with the 5 cylinder engine and hes looking to fit a rev counter but all the aftermarket ones seem to be 4 6 8 cylinder engine ones. He has a trigger wheel etc if this is how landy ones work. Or any other suggestions?
LandyManLuke
It's driven straight off the ECU, via pin 19 in the engine loom connection, IIRC. Standard Diesel tachos work differently to the petrol ones, which look at ignition events (being wired to the coil) and use the '4 6 8' switch to correctly divide the number of events up into 'sparks-per-engine-rev'. Alternatively, a standard diesel tacho uses the alternator W terminal, which means the exact relationship is unknown - hence the presence of a fine tuning adjustment. It's worth noting that a few vehicles, like range rover classics, use the alternator W terminal method, regardless of the engine (diesel/petrol) fitted. Alternator W terminal type rev counters are readily available, I have a VDO one fitted, but they're generally harder to find and more expensive than the common petrol ones. jonnymaserati
can you not run it off a trigger wheel... a 4 tooth wheel will give 4 spikes per rev off a trigger sensor?
