digiboy
All, Changed the oil in my gearbox/IRD/diff today on my 2002 TD4. I found the IRD oil to be thick and gungy and the drain plug had metal filings on. The box seems to work OKish, there it's noisy under load in 3rd gear, but if you avoid this then it drives OK. I've replaced the viscous coupling and bearings a month ago as they were noisy and tight when reversing on lock, obviously the cause. My question really is, and I'm assuming the IRD will fail pretty soon, has anyone had experience of re-con units or is it better to go for a new one? The recon ones seem around the £450 mark and the new ones £800, unless anyone can recommend a company that is cheaper? Regards.

If there's only a noise in 3rd gear then it's not caused by the IRD box, but the gearbox. If the IRD box was gone it would be noisey in all gears especially as the speed rises. The IRD box takes the place of the O/S driveshaft and is connected to the Final Drive of the gearbox and so any noise from it would be speed related not gear related. A bit of metal filings in the oil isn't something I would worry about if you've replaced the VC. If there was no chunks of metal and there is no banging or whining, then you've probably caught it in time. Gear box is a different story tho
digiboy
Thanks Eggnchips, Yeh - the noise appears to be only on 3rd gear at low revs and a little bit on 2nd. Always improving as the speed picks up and very quiet when on a decent road at 60-70. Hopefully it will last a while, had the gearbox off my campervan this year due to an engine oil seal, so I don't fancy doing the Hippo too soon! Happy Christmas!
