61a
After 156,000 miles the sterring box on my 300tdi is leaking from the bottom where the drag link attaches. Is it worth rebuilding it as I have seen a set of seals for about £15 but wondered whether its worth the effort or am I better off fitting a replacement unit ? Thanks Jules
jerboa
Definately not worth it, as far as I know, you need some fairly specialist tools. Recon'd boxes are only £110 ish (exchange) from paddocks, come with a years warranty and wont go wrong (whereas a home rebuilt one might..) dooroy
Agree with jerboa . When mine started leaking I asked about seals from the local main dlr - was advised they were a waste of time . At that mileage the shafts etc could be marked/worn and new seals will fail soon again . I went the Paddocks route and everything worked out fine . If I was doing it again I would get the recon box with the drop arm attached for the sake of the extra few pounds . The drop arm can be very difficult to remove - I had a 10 ton hydraulic puller and it just about managed it .

61a
Thanks for the help, I thought I would be lucky to get away with a few seals. Jules
jbs
Go direct to adwest and get one that is done directly from the manufacturer
