Fuel Pressure Regulator

After replacing and removing just about everything (test the MAF tomorrow), in search of the intermittent power loss issue on My 110 (TD5 MY>03 89K). After recent posts on here, I went back to square one and checked the Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) again and found that after ruling it out as I couldn't see a leak, I can now see one so clearly need to change it, not a big deal I know but I have a couple of questions....

I have read the post in the tech archive on here but my Defender TD5 is a later engine and things are in slightly different places to the one in the tech archive, the cooler pipe does not seem to get in the way on mine do I really need to remove it?

Going to buy a genuine parts FPR but when I phoned LR main dealer this morning was told the part was £127.00, this was more than expected are Lancaster having a laugh?

Clearly I need to change the gasket but after a search on the web I also read that I should change the O ring (ERR 6761) on the engine block, the guy on the parts desk said that Land Rover don't bother changing this but as it is only 80p why would you not change it?

The online manual I found also says replace the filter but does not say which filter!!! Again do I really need to do this?

Finally any tips? Or time saving advice from anyone doing this job of late? I know it is not the biggest job in the world but I do like to get things right first time.

Cheers, Jason.

I'm just about to do this to my 03 Disco TD5, although it looks as if it would be easier on the Defender - there's more space for starters. If you've the later EU3 engine, the regulator should have 3 pipes and the technical archive article here covers it on the Disco:

http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=25537

As for the filter, you can see this in the write up on the discovery2.co.uk website:

http://www.discovery2.co.uk/Fpr.html

The filter is a small gauze filter just behind the o-ring. I'm going to change the o-ring - it's pennies as you say and worth doing now - but the filter is silly money if I recall. I'm going to see if I can just clean it and re-use it.

I got the regulator, gasket and o-ring from www.lrseries.com - cheapest I could find. It's an OEM regulator (and in a Britpart box).

Hope this helps - others may have more practical experience though!

I'm just about to do this too.

I also bought my gasket, regulator and o ring from LR Series - but I went for OE parts.

My engine has started to feel a bit 'lumpier' recently and I'm hoping the regulator leak will be the reason...

I hope that it will be eaiser than the Discovery one biggrin.gif I read the post from the tech archive on here hence my comments about the cooler pipe removal, yes my TD5 is the later EU3 engine and there is more room, hence the question about not removing it....

I also saw the post on the Discovery forum, guess I didn't read it correctly as I didn't see the bit about the filter, if its just a bit of gause I will just clean it unless it's damaged.

My Defender to the best of my knowelge is a "Britpart free zone" so I won't be going down that route but thanks anyway I would prefer to spend the extra money and not have to do it again in six months......

Cheers, Jason.

Again thanks, just looked at the OE one on LRSeries and the Main Dealer price is cheaper... I guess Lancaster are not that bad then.

Jason, we'll chat tomorrow I'm sure but I can get quite a good deal from Lancaster if you want one in a LR box?

Was there not a recent thread about replacing the O rings on the pressure regulator which are prone to leaking - worth a punt at 1% of the cost of a new FPR?

Are you sure its more ?

I paid £124.91 including postage for ETC7939 ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT, ERR6761 FUEL STRAINER O RING, MSX000010 FUEL CONNECTOR BLOCK GASKET and LR016319 CONNECTOR FUEL BLOCK.

That's the earlier 2 pipe one though.

Even with genuine there is no guarantee that it will last any longer. On my TD5 Disco it was replaced twice in less than a year and both times it was genuine. My current TD5 Defender has been leaking for the last 6 months with no effect on performance. I do regularly clean accumulations of Deisel from the starter and have learned to live with it. When the two were changed on the Disco they were done by a very reliable LR independant who used new gaskets etc;

I think that the regulator itself is the problem in that it almost looks like an after thought rather than designed in.

Well I changed the FPR today, a very straight forward job but not the quickest due to the space, I actualy found it eaiser to remove the pipes from the FPR to get at the bottom bolt, I changed two of the pipes but re-used the pipe that goes to the front, even though it was supplied in the kit as it would have been a pain to remove, mine is also the newer 3 pipe unit, but didn't really make any diffrence.

I also changed the MAF as when Si tested it yesterday it was showing low readings and was failing!!! Land Rover got the best part of £200 out of me today....mad.gif .

The good news however is my 110 has it's mojo back....rolleyes.gif it pulls like a train, and has got it's top end back, I didn't go on a long run, but up some hills, big hills, and she loved them. So it looks like all my troubles have been down to a couple of things.... that have both been slowly failing and causing a slow loss of power, which has also been on and off.

Strange really, I had started to fall out of love with the 110 because the problem was starting to get me down, replacing something to find there was no improvement..

I felt a bit ashamed yesterday I was over at Simon's and his new built 110 is great, he has got so much passion for his 110, and mine needs so many little bits doing, that I just could not be bothered to do, as I almost sold it.

After I came back from my test drive, I started to tick off some of the small jobs, changed some rusty bolts and screws and started to make a list of things I will do when I finish the trailer and get some cash, that I don't hand to Land Rover......

First thing on the list is give some of my cash to Ian (porny) and have the old girl remaped and a decat then some rock sliders and I think I may make some changes to the seats, but not before I sort out all thoes little jobs I have left because she didn't deserve them doing.........

:i-m_so_happy:

Good news Buddy - very glad she's firing on all cylinders again.

It's funny how a little problem like that can really drag morale down - and how fixing it can change your whole outlook!

Tracker sorted today - thanks for the heads up Jason - we have a scheme through work where we effectively get free installation and subscription.....

Map light in too - my first 'mod' - hooray!
