Flickering Rev Needle and black/blue smoke from exhaust

Whilst my dad and i were going for a long drive searching for a newer defender than our P reg Discovery we noticed that whilst the engine is under high revs and goin up hill in 3rd or 4th the rev needdle is flickering. Yet the engine is not rising or dropping in revs. After noticing the rev needle was flickering we looked in the passenger side mirror and rear view mirror and could see a long and clearly visible smoke trail behind us. Our mechanic had tweaked the fuel pump because according to him it couldn't pull a skin of a rice pudding never mind itself up a hill. Any ideas what would cause the rev needle to flicker but not change the engine revs? And, do you think our mechanic has tweaked the fuel pump too much?

check the single wire on the back of the alternator they become loose, unsure about the other sorry.

It sounds like 2 unrelated problems, The rev counter is fed straight off the alternator, so check that or it could be an earth.

The smoke is probably because the fuel pump has been tweaked, plus all diesels smoke under load

How much work has the car done? My L reg 300 Tdi did the same before i got rid of it - was the clutch slipping. As others have said though, rev indicator is usually indicator that the alternator or connection to it is dodgy. The smoke could well be an incorrect timing adjustment.
