whiteboy
OK so was driving along today then started hearing some strange noises coming from the front right wheel. It started making some bangs and crunching then suddenly there was big bang and it felt like I lost power to the front wheel as the car swerved to the left. After this there is now a squeaking noise coming from the front end. Also when you press the brake peddle it slacker than normal then tightens up on the next press. Anyone have any ideas anything obvious to check? Thanks
BogMonster
Bangs and crunches indicate the CV joint has probably collapsed. If the vehicle is still driveable, it won't be for much longer so don't use it. The front wheel could lock up without warning and throw you off the road if the CV is really badly broken up. The brake pedal slackness would worry me as that suggests a wheel bearing which if it is that bad could be dangerous - basically slack in the wheel bearing lets the disc push the pistons back into the caliper which gives the slackness but it's got to be pretty bad to do that. You need to check everything very thoroughly on that corner - wheel bearings, CV and the swivel pins.
Milemarker Type S
Failed/ failing wheel bearing gets my vote... either way jack up that corner and have a waggle of the wheel.
BogMonster
If the bangs and crunches are from the wheel bearing really seriously don't drive it as the whole hub will come off with the wheel attached and that is a really big laundry moment...
