steve-c
Hi guys, 91 plate 90 defender steering damper (Standard) If i remove the damper it takes two hands to compress and retract the damper would you say this is normal ? also should the damper have a self centering action.. Just trying to get the steering a tad lighter for the wifey if poss.. cheers steve
nickwilliams
The force required to compress the damper will be higher if you try to do it quickly ('cos that is what they are for) but if it will not compress at any speed without pushing hard with both hand the I'd say it's knackered. It's not supposed to be sprung to the centre. The damper is not critical, particularly if driving only on smooth Tarmac. Try leaving it off for a while and see how she gets on. Stiff steering is often also caused by the universal joints in the steering colum siezing up so some oil on those won't do any harm either.
