help needed steering problems

hi im new to landrovers and to this forum.

basically i need a bit of advice on how to cure my 200 tdi 1994 unstable cornering

when going into right hand corners it feels as though the tyres are over inflated if that makes sense.

i have fitted new drag link ends both sides

new steering damper

new swivel kit top pin and bottom pin with bearings drivers side

new wheel bearing drivers side

new shocks and springs (+1 inch) all round

I checked the amount of turns from centre of steering wheel to left lock and from centre of steering to right lock and the results are as follows

centre to left lock 2 full turns

centre to right lock 1 1/2 turns

i also noticed if i turn the steering wheel 1/4 turn from centre to the left so as to make the steering box central the drivers side front tyre is noticable pointing left where as the passenger side tyre looks almost straight ahead

now my question is have i made a mess of fitting the drag ends (the ones on the steering damper bar) and this has caused the steering box to go out of sync and if so how do i rectify this?

all help and advice much appreciated

and this is a brilliant forum and i hope to be able to contribute

thanks

paul

You really should start by getting the steering box straight ahead and then adjusting the draglink threads until the wheels match. Firstly get the wheels in the straight ahead position and adjust the tracking so the front wheels are within the specified limits (0 to 2mm toe out) and then set up the draglink to make sure the steering box is central and lastly centralise the steering wheel as that will probably now be off centre.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by feels like the tyres are over inflated - unsteady straight-line tracking, dodgy cornering or what?

hi thanks for the reply i am getting the tracking checked/set this week

what i meant by the over inflated feeling was when cornering especially right hand corners it is definately dodgy the only way to describe it is as if it is oversteering or as if the tyres have been massively over inflated which they havent btw

im sorry if the description is a little vague im learning as i go here

once the tracking is set and adjusted ill try and set up the steering box and draglink any tips on how its done

thanks

If yours has the disposable type of baal joint on the steering box drag link then it should have a notch at the back of the drop arm which corresponds to a hole in the bottom face of the steering box. IIRC they are 7mm and you stuff a drill bit into both to hold the steering box in it's centre position before setting the steering.

If you don't have it then IIRC you drop the drag linkm turn fully left and then 2 full turns right, this is the steering box centralised.

The drop arm will point to the RHS, it needs to be parallel to the steering arm on the LHS knuckle, which points inwards.

If you have lifted the trcuk and inch (possible more becasue your old springs would have sagged) then you will have decreased the castor angle. A 2" lift reduces the 3deg nominal castor to zero, this has a dramatic effect on the steering.

if your is also Toe-out you will have very little steering feedback, if it's parallel or toe-in it will be light and twitchy with little feeling.

I'm curious that you had to replace the driver's steering swivel when it;s the passenger's one that takes the highest load.

Also, is it actually understeering or does it just feel horrible? on your old springs, did you notice fi they were handed? I don't know which model years but on some Discos they were handed, if your new ones aren't then it will be soft on the sriver's side with the result that in LH bends the car will roll more, added to by propshaft torque, whereas LH neds it will hardly roll at all which can feel a bit odd.

You don't say where you are, do you know any other LR owners? anywhere near me at all?

hi thanks for the reply im based at loch lomomd so a few hours away from yorkshire anyways after taking your advice and checking the steering box centralisation (the track rode end type so had the hole in the back of the arm to lock in position) i found it was indeed out a bit so got that set and then trundled down to local garage to get tracking set which was slightly out and hadling in corners still felt very poor

i then checked my original springs and found that there were handed the drivers one being slightly taller where as the lift springs are not handed and are of equal lengths im coming to the opinion that it may be the lift springs that are the problem so next stage would be to put the original springs back on and see if the problem disapears

the reason i had to do the driver side swivel was down to the previous owner either not noticing a leaking seal or not bothering about it resulting in the bottom swivel bearing collapsing and putting a nice groove in the pin so it got new top pin and bottom pins at the same time i renewed everything

i have also noticed that the driver side sits approx 20mm lower than the passenger side

swapped the driver spring and shock around with the passenger side and made no difference pulled and levered on panhard rod to check bushes they seem ok then done same on the hockey sticks they seem ok

now im out of ideas :(

update

thanks for all the replies i have finally got some where with this

started of by centralising the steering box then went and got the tracking set

then i adjusted the drag link to centre the steering wheel.

spent hours trawling through various posts on here and ended up out with the ruler and measured the distance between the chassis and axle front and rear and came to the conclusion the o/s or drivers side was 20mm lower than the n/s :o

i then stripped all four springs back of and found that they are of equal length with from all the reading of posts on here made sense of the 20mm difference as the 200 tdi had longer springs on the driver side

so to combat this a set of 20mm alloy spacers were ordered £20 :D and fitted to the driver side and hey presto truck now sits level and handles in corners as good as i imagine it will

next thing is mot time next month so we will see what that throws up

thanks again every one
