Exhaust Boxes

Recommended Posts

Ive recently made a new exhaust for my 300Tdi 90, I originally had a De-cat pipe and a middle box with the pipe modified so it came out over the top of the chassis rail behind the rear wheel.

Ive now moved the pipe so that it come out behind the passenger door after leaving the end of the de-cat pipe and and sweeping up over the top of the chassis rail just infront of the a-frame crossmember.

The pipe is now completely straight through and although it sounds great its a little bit loud when towing a heavy load etc.

Can anyone reccomend a box to use to try and reduce the noise level slightly?

Cheers

Tris

You could fabricate your own silencer.... with a length of perforated tube ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=exhaust+perforated+tube&_sacat=See-All-Categories ), some glass fibre material (exhaust rated) ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=exhaust+glass+packing ) and a rolled outer casing, cut to length

It will work, but it my not provide you with the noise (dBA) reduction you are looking for, there is a bit of science to exhausts and looking for information on noise control with them is a PIA as there is very little that is simple and practical i.e. this length of silencer = this dBA rating...

If you're looking for design advice, i'd google search for "muffler", unfortunately the yanks are more internet literate that the english speaking world and they seems to spend more time hodrodding the vehicles than we do

One short document is the following: http://www.paraglidingteam.nl/PPGTechnics/sound%20and%20noise/Mufflers/1155795969.pdf

There is also an interesting narrow band filter (device that filters noise in a specific band) that seems to be very effective for aiding in suppressing exhaust drone, called an "exhaust resonator tube", or !1/4 wave resonator" or "side branch resonator". good link here (if you can find the space for it....) http://www.performancetrucks.net/forums/gm-engine-exhaust-performance-21/how-build-exhaust-resonator-tube-eliminate-drone-489463/

If you have the time (or interest) there is a very good document on exhaust design published for an ASHARE Conference (American Society of Heating, Air-conditioning & Refrigeration Engineers, very respectable society, spend a lot of money on research and well regulated) http://www.enoisecontrol.com/related_articles/engine_exhaust_sound_control_barrier_wall.pdf
