1987 2.5td Injector Pump Leak @ Return Section from Turbo + Fuel Retur

Recommended Posts

@I have noticed a small diesel leak coming from underneath the fuel injector pump of my 2.5TD. Its coming from the part of the pump where there is two pipes returning to this pump. One pipe is from the turbo and the other a fuel return from the injectors. It seems to me to be a selection of alloy components that make up this part of the pump and im 90% sure it isnt a problem with any of these two pipes returning to the pump, so im guessing it could be a gasket needing replacing on this part of the pump. Its a small square section of the pump down the left side of the pump, or down the passenger side facing this pump as its situated in the vehicle.

It looks to be an easy repair, that is given the component was anything other than the injector pump that it is and from all ive re\d and heard, these units are not to be played with by anything other than a specialist and experienced defender mechanic.

Im thinking if I can remove this simple sandwhich of alloy components where these return pipes are and leave the whole pump situated and not disturb it, then im guessing its a possible gasket repair and fix by myself.

Though on the otherhand im 99% cetain that its not going to be myself that repairs this pump if the whole component has to be removed from the engine to repair it.

Has anyone had to repair one of these before and can you advise and point me towards this repair.

Not at present though Thursday I will try to sort some.

Simply finding any such parts for this Lucas Fuel pump is going to be a bloody mare as I cant seem to find anything other than new, expensive or reconditioned units online and I really dont want to have to replace the whole unit at the expense of £300 plus having a diesel specialist do the work for me as I know their a pain to replace.

Ive got a full timing kit ready to do the timingbelt and all gaskets and seals here and now, so that would be the good time to do this, but from what ive read, these pumps are a pain to remove and replace so far as timing and setting back up again. Obviously because its time critical in its purpose and function. So far as any kind of carb goes, ive worked on chainsaw carbs and these are bad enough, let alone this one.

find your nearest Lucas/CAV fuel injection supplier.

some of the links here might help, http://www.google.co...rch?q=Lucas/CAV

add your nearest big town/city to your profile too, there maybe other members in your local area willing to help.

A Lucas Specialist.. That sounds like exactly what this problem needs, in moe ways than one, parts, pump schematics and mostly advice. Though Lucas Specialist5 sounds expensive too. SIGH!

I had endless leaks from my 2.5TD consisting of the injector pump leaking fuel, crank seals, valve stem seals, I could go on. It would be more economical in the long run parts and labour wise to swap the engine for a 200tdi from a discovery if you are feeling slightly adventurous? It's the best thing I've done on my '87, got an engine with 110,000miles and everything to get it up and running for £400 off ebay and it only took a day to fit. There's plenty of guides on how to get it done on the tinterweb : )

  • 2 weeks later...

Got a couple of pics to locate the source of problem.. Its below the Lucas CAV Pump, its an advance device according to schematic diagrams. Seems it could be a simple gasket where this unit attaches to the pump, or may be worn copper washers upon the rotating shaft thats within this advance unit. I can get a rebuild kit to do the whole pump. but I could likely get away with simply issolating the repair down to this individual part itself without the need to tear appart the whole thing and possibly without even taking the pump off at all? I dunno, maybe someone else would know better?

Ive posted the pics below
