Robb_666
Evening all, Hoping somebody could help me with a few electrical problems im having at the moment. Automotive electronics aren't my strong point but im learning. Basically Monday morning on the way to work (temp was - 4) got a mile away from home and my disco cut out on me. Noticed my battery light came on and ground to a halt. Switched everything off and she started again with a cough and splutter and off we go again no issues at all. However once i did get it started again then noticed ive lost my dash lights, my headlight levelling no longer works and when i got to work a colleague pointed out i have no side lights or brake lights at all on the o/s. Although my o/s indicaters still work but flash really fast. On the way home that afternoon i did stop at a motor factors to buy a new earth strap for the battery as i know these are prone to corrosion. Replaced it nothing has changed except the motor seems to start easier than normal. (probably just me going mad but anyway) No fuses have blown at all. Also checked alternator whilst running and its reading 14.1 V so thats not the problem. And now i really dont know where to look as haynes manual wiring diagrams i have are for pre 94 models (even though it states up to 95 on the cover) and cant find any diagrams in the rave manual i have . Really hope someone can help as im clueless at the moment Cheers Rob
teabag
Maybe a fuseable link has failed, not unknown untill they were put in a box on the later D1s. So depending on model year U will find them buried in the fabric of the wiring loom near the battery or in the underbonnet fusebox.. http://www.jpurnell.com/RR/repairs/fusible%20link%20repair.htm
Robb_666
Thanks for the reply. My disco is a '95 300tdi manual. Sorry completely forgot to include vehicle details. I presume it doesn't have the fusible links as ive got the engine bay fuse box. Only thing i can think of it being possibly is a bad earth but locating it and the fact its knocked out so many things makes me think otherwise. Unless they are all connected to the same earth? Today i had another attempt at fixing said faults. Wasnt entirely sure it would work tbh but tried anyway. Basically took the earth cable out of the headlight levelling switch plug stuck in a new connection and ran this directly to the negative terminal on the battery. Switched on my ignition turned on my lights played with the switch. No movement whatsoever. Also replaced a very corroded earth on the scuttle panel made no difference didnt think it would though. And cleaned up every earthi could find in the engine bay to no avail . Now starting to fear it may be a dash out job. Are there any earths behind the dash? Or anything else i haven't thought of? Cheers again Rob
disco_al
could also be a relay or two playing up - just solved my electric seat/radio problem - accessory relay behind lh kick panel.
