Front Wiper Motor Assy Identification

My wipers on my '98 300Tdi Defender don't sweep a large enough area of the screen - I have a large area on the RHS unswept and the wipers don't overlap in the middle which isn't ideal. They also park quite some way up the screen.

I've checked the whole assy and it seems fine with no excessive play anywhere. While checking it out I noted the numbers on the motor assy as:76346B and 54072223A.

I'm wondering if when it had a new bulkhead fitted the wrong motor was used. If someone could identify the correct numbers I would be very grateful.

Thanks in anticipation,

Henry.

Thanks for the quick reply, I had a look at the link and the unit does look like that.

Yes, all is tight, the 17mm nut, if I remember correctly, where the tube comes into the unit and also the fixing of the motor to the bulkhead. While I was at it I looked inside the wheel assy and all was well, like new in fact.

I'm still wondering if the motor assy is wrong, if stroke or cable movement is shorter than intended it would have the effect I'm getting. I'll see if I can get something local that is known to be correct and try it.

Again, thanks for the reply.

Henry.

PS Just googled "lucas wiper motor" and came up with this: linky it is a Co. that supply parts and different drive gears that actuate from 90 to 130 degrees. Quite interesting page with lots of info.

My paper parts book shows the [big] drive gear in the motor as 115 degree LR part 517646, maybe it's either ben changed at sometime or the park switch ramp [clips into the gear] has been moved & is sitching the motor off before it's completed a full sweep.

the link you found also mentions different gear sweeps, at paregraph 2 in the technical section of the link.

Having looked more closely at the info on the SVC site last night I noticed that the wheel boxes come with 32 & 40 tooth wheels, which put some doubt in my mind as to how to proceed.

This evening I decided to check what number was on the gearwheel in my wiper motor assy and it is for a 115 sweep! So, after doing a few sums it seems that I have wheel boxes with 40 teeth - which is why I'm only getting about 90 degrees sweep with a 115 degree wheel.

The bad news is I think the dash will have to come out to put 32 teeth wheelboxes in, the good news is I think i have a pair.

So, thanks for your help Western - I'm off to search for an idiots guide to dash removal now.........

Your correct the dash top padded part has to come off to allow access to the wheel boxes & drive cable tubes, motor & cable has to come out of the vehicle too.

there's a thread done by V8Freak when he replaced wheelboxes, a search shold drag it up from the depths.

wasn't aware the wheelboxes has different gears, the standard item has a fairly large gear in them.
