  1. Well got rid of the noise. Trying to sort another problem with incorrect speedo readin. Fitted new cable and the noise has disappeared. Didn't solve speedo problem but l can tick another job off my long list of to do jobs.
  2. Wasn't far out with my guesstimate I said it was 40% out its around 38%. One other point I forgot to mention the neddle use to jump a small amount before changing the cable. Now it is quite erratic making me suspect even more its a fault on the speedo clock itself ?
  3. Well update first replacing cable has solved another problem tapping noise thats gone so worth replacing for that alone. However, mileage still out indicates 5.6 miles for a journey that I know is 9 miles. I know what you mean I can work out the exact difference and just pro rata it up. Just like to sort it. Mo has good point as my next step would be to swap the speedo clock so maybe someone may have just done a conversion and have a spare? Must admit I enjoyed myself today covered in oil and grazed knuckles ah happy days. Thanks for the feedback it helps.
  4. Okay old cable off new one connected in dash. Then started on speedo drive gear it was a bit of a pain but with my trusty WD40 and some gentle coaxing out it popped. To my amazement it was in reasonable condition no excessive wear. Biggest surprise is it's yellow 22 teeth exactly what Land Rover recommend for 235/70/16 tyre's ? So unless the cable had a problem and won't know till all connected again and give it a try, then it's got to be a faulty speedo clock ? Unless anyone else has any suggestions ? The MPH isn't a big issue can use sat nav and tipex at a push. But mileage being out does concern me and want to sort it.
  5. Got one more shift to work tomorrow then off Thursday so will spend couple hours under it see whats what appreciate suggestions
  6. Off work this Thursday so will fit the new speedo and check the gear colour and number of teeth.
  7. The speed is only about 10% out based on satnav. But mileage travelled is way out by around 40%. Reading low ?
  8. Well got it wrong it is there in neutral too and increases when the revs increase. Actually it would be a tappit noise if it wasn't coming from gearbox area instead of the engine. Only time it goes is when vehicle stood still in neutral and I rev the engine.
  9. When driving in gear there is a ticking sound coming from the gearbox area, revving the engine in neutral sound goes away. Also seems to go when hold clutch in ? Sounds like something attached to prop shaft that catches as its turning but cannot see anything ? Any ideas ?
  10. Did you join mate the bell housing up with sealant ? Read somewhere this can cause problems think it was on Ashcrofts site !
  11. I have just got defender 90 with a 300 tdi engine same 380 box and have the same leak not had landrover for years and they where old series models. So worried when I saw leak and hole realise now its a drain for the bell housing. I have loads of leaks underneath didn't see any when I bought it. Typical anyway just thought you might be comforted to know someone has a worse condition than you :'(
  12. Great then i am on the right lines to getting this sorted, I will still be suprised though if the addition of the 2 extra teeth on the gear make such a big impact on the mileage ?
  13. Ah that's interesting asked someone at Craddock's they said it was yellow based on my tyre size ! I got the impression it was smaller tyre more teeth on the gear is that correct, been working long spell of 12 hour shifts brain same as land rover struggling to get into 2nd gear this morning.
  14. Suspected that, 235/70/16 tyre specifies a yellow gear think its 22 teeth. The original factory fitted gear is a green 20 teeth for std wheel and tyre size. I won't know till I take it out while replacing the cable ! Job for next week when I am off work. Wondering if its got some wear on the gear that it might be slipping too which will make the error worse Nice to get back to working on a vehicle that doesn't need computer diagnostics for every little job.
  15. I recently posted a topic about incorrect wheel size and its impact on my indicated speed and mileage. Thought originally the problem may have been due to the disco alloys fitted with 235/70 tyres, which are smaller diameter than original wheels and tyres. Now however, I think there is something more seriously wrong as the indicated mileage on the clock and trip meter appears to be significantly out by around 40%. I have Just ordered a replacement speedo cable, just in case the original is damaged think its unlikely though. I intend to inspect the nylon gear when I replace the cable in case thats worn. The next stage after that is to possibly replace the Speedometer itself, does anyone have experience of a speedometer failure with incorrect mileage as in my case. Or is there something else I have overlooked ? Noticed on the Ashcroft website they supply reconditioned gearboxes where you can specify different gearing ratios from the original. Not sure if this has been done to this box or if it would impact the odometer ? Any feedback would be much appreciated.
  16. Been driving it now for just under a week and just starting to get use to the gears again. Noticed when I first set off 2nd is not too bad, but after driving for a while it gets worse which suggests oil warming up and viscosity changing. So definate oil change is first priority. I have also noticed after driving for a while 3rd starts to get a bit notchy again more evidence it is oil related. As for 4th it seems to go in okay when I get the gear stick position right, so need to look for wear on the gear stick turret housing as suggested. It may require slight adjustment of springs ! but unlikely though as 3rd seems okay seems to be well aligned so more likely wear on the turret . Thanks for all the help and advice feel confident now that its not a major problem, at least I dont need to look at getting a replacement box Phew !!! Just 101 other jobs to sort now happy days
  17. Thanks for that would have put MTF in transfer box too any idea how much it takes roughly ?
  18. The more I read the more I am convinced I need oil change. MTF94 seems to be the popular choice so probably go with that. The gearbox R380 I believe takes about 2.7 litres any idea how much the transfer box takes ? Planning to get 5 litres anyway so hopefully that will be enough, but would like to know for future.
  19. Thanks for the advice regarding the oil don't know when it was last changed so needs doing. I know what you mean about gear changing, having driven modern saloon cars for a while its taken time to re-adjust again to Land Rover gears. Read a couple of pointers on internet regarding the specific gears I have problems with i.e 1. Using sealant on gearbox bell housing surface leads to a blocked core plug ?, this forcing hyraulic pressure inward making these gear selections difficult. 2. Worn turret housing, around selector fork springs again seems to primarily affect same gears I am having problems with. 3. Alignment of selector springs may require adjusting, to optmise position of fork during gear selection. Anyway if oil does not resolve it, I have other possible areas to look at. If there are any other possible suggestions or recommendations out there i am always willing to learn.
  20. Another issue with my recently aquired Defender. Its been some while since my old SIIA and I have fond memorys of struggling with gear selection (specially on 2nd) but got use to it and it wasn't a problem. I also use to have a SIII dont remember that being too bad either! However, I was expecting better from a Defender (even if it is 19 years old). Sadly its not good, 2nd crunches unless I get the revs right and 4th is a pig to get in. The others are okay-ish and can live with. Dont think its the clutch, as the gears go in fine on idle and no slippage when driving. Selecting 1st, 3rd, 5th and reverse are not a problem, Just 2nd and 4th. Maybe a stupid question but bear with me, its been 15 years since my last Land Rover and been driving noddy cars inbetween . Is this normal or do I have a problem with the gearbox or even the selectors in the transfer box ? I am planning a long slow renovation (labour of love) during my twighlight years, so I am expecting to replace major parts. However, dont want to change both the gearbox and transfer box at this stage if I dont need to. Any suggestions or recommendations ?
  21. In case the second reply didnt work sent you one direct. Its indicating around 6.8 miles on a journey I do regular and its normally 9 miles. Suspect fault on speedo cable or worn gear, I have already ordered a cable and will inspect condition of the transfer gear when I do it.
  22. On a 9 mile journey its showing 6.8 miles not good. I agree over long distance I wouldn't bother. Replied to the above comments but not shown up. Suspect fault with speedo cable or gear worn, I have already ordered the speedo cable.
  23. Good points thinking the gear change is cheapest option but now got bigger concern ! I travel approx 9 miles to work but only indicating 6.8 miles so i reckon mileage out by 25% ? If my logic is correct with smaller tyre/wheel 1 revolution will take me a shorter distance than 1 revolution of the bigger tyre/wheel so to cover the same distance the smaller wheels should indicate a higher mileage due to higher number of revoultions. so why is my mileage lower than expected ? I know comparison with sat nav is not ideal and open to some variation but the speedo appears to be constantly reading 5 mph low across the board from 30 to 70 ? My next thought is fault with speedometer cable maybe damaged inside the sleeve, or the teeth on the gear are worn slippage? Then comes my dilema do I get direct replacement gear and hope it sorts the problem ? or go for a different tooth variant to compensate for wheel/tyre size yellow 22 teeth based on 235/70 tyre size. Either way the cable is first thing to replace and while doing that remove the gear to inspect it ? Thanks for the feedback plenty to think about.
  24. I have just bought a Defender 90 300TDI, very pleased with it. Previously only had SIIA and S3 many years ago. It has good body and chassis and came with Disco alloy wheels with 235/70/16 tyres. Hence my problem noticed my normal journey was indicating 4 miles less than usual so immediatley realised the mileage is probably wrong. Checked with sat nav and found speed is 5 mph low on speedo. Guess my wheel and tyre size are giving me a false indication of speed and mileage. I expect this has been a regular topic, but for a new member please be patient. Can I fit bigger tyres on the rims to rectify this problem (really like the look of the wheels and they are in great condition). Can I change the gearing to accomodate this ? if so whats involved,is it one of those jobs you leave to proffesionals ? I could sell these rims and fit originals but reluctant too I like the looks.. As I have now maxed out money wise on the purchase of this magnificent vehicle, so I am looking ideally for cheapest solution. Saying that will need to look at rerplacing front tyres by end of year anyway. I also guess that I have to change all 4 tyres if thats the only serious option, cannot get away with just changing front ones. Any suggestions or recommendations ?
