  1. Double cardon props do not allow more angularity. In fact usually less. Because they have a big extra bit in the middle.

They are only needed when the diff pinion points at the transfer box rather than being parallel so UJ angular acceleration isn't cancelled out.

You need a longer prop if it is too short.

  2. Am after a bit of advice.. I have 24-spine (diff end) halfshafts in my front axle - not sure which ones these are as they were on it when i got it.

The diff end spline is approx 1.24" in diameter but the shaft tapers down to 1.06" (10 spline shaft size?) in the middle section for most of the length of the shaft before going back upto size where it goes into the swivel.

Is this normal? I thought 24-spline shafts would be 1.24" along the entire length, reducing the diameter seems intentionally weak, i'm surprised i haven't broken them yet.. (35"s, front ARB)

Shafts should always be necked down at the end of the splined section. Removes stress risers and is the proper way too make them.

  3. I agree that the Rose joint probably is not idea but wear does not concern me. The truck is used for comps only these days and It doesn't bother me if I have to put a new one on every couple of events. It only takes 10 mins to change them and they aint pricey!

The fact the bolt through the joint is in single sheer has concerned me a little as I have mentioned in the other thread. But its a 3/4 bolt and as soon as I have them it will be fitted with the best quality bolt I can find. If I cant find anything in good enough material I'll get a few specials made. Other than trying it and seeing how the setup performs/lasts I cant really comment any more. As long as the bolt stays tight and straight I can deal with the rest. I know that the track rod end is made of material probably far superior to your average bolt but they too are only in single sheer and the diameter of the taper where it leaves the pitman arm is about 3-4mm less than the bolt ive used.

Time will tell, I cant really see any way of using a TRE without having a new pitman arm made up to take them! If anyone does have any ideas I'd love to hear them.

For the pitman arm, bore out the taper and thread it to match the studded end on a studded rod end. Use a lock nut to secure although it can't come loose as long as it is attached to the drag link.

Speaking with Aurora and the nearest environment ot ours is all the quarry and mining stuff they supply. Use PTFE lined as there is less space for carp in the joint, do not use grease and accept they are consumable items.

Problem with reuseable ones is that you replace the internals but the outers on all joints will stretch and ovalise.

  4. That was on the Scrap Iron stand and was tims truck

That was the version from Ferrilever. We redesigned it, remade it with improvements, re did all the front shock mounts, then gave it away!!!

Great on ramps and for posing around on axle twisters. No good driving up a really steep set of ledges.

Bring on the 4 link and coilovers

  5. That's because a large proportion of the Pirate 'Clique' are so far up their own bottoms they need a lantern and so anti anyone suggesting anything that might be different from the norm that they could all be Jesuits. God help anyone that suggests anything different unless they have more than 20K posts and have sworn allegiance to the Good Ol' USof A. Just my opinion and not necessarily those of the any other free thinking inhabitants of planet earth

Always found them really helpful, including some of the top end sponsored team guys. They have some really varied builds on there. Buggies, truggies, full sizes, desert stuff. 3 link, 4 link, 1 link, hydro, no hydro, coils, leafs...........

And talking appreciating different approaches, isn't this a one make vehicle site????? :D

I do agree with the comment that the "patriotism" can be a bit much.

  6. I have not said, nor do I intend, that everyone who spends a large amount of money is either no good or compensating.

If anyone wants to feel slagged or dissed or even just confused then please go ahead.

I just think it is sad that people feel the need to keep bringing this sort of thing up.

Interestingly, you hardly ever see it on Pirate where there just seems to be interest in people building cool vehicles right across the spectrum of spend. But maybe this is just the English way.

And I feel neither dissed nor slagged, quite happy doing my own thing. And I know I can't drive! :D

  7. The comments that I made and will make are not aimed at any individual, more a view which I have of what I see. There are undeniably some very expensive cars built for people who have a huge budget to compensate for their abilities. I must draw this conclusion because they still don't win.

So people who spend money are just compensating? Maybe they like nice things and it's what they want to do?? And it is their money.

This is no more fair or reasonable than saying those people who don't have a "huge budget" must be stupid because they can't get a good enough job to make enough money. So they compensate for that by slagging off people who do have money. That would be an obviously ridiculous opinion.

Let's just get off the budget abuse.

Things are driven forward by BOTH investment and backyard / barnyard ingenuity. Or even a combination of the 2.

  8. Hi stranger! No, not banned yet but are you sure about your choice of axles?

    Hi Paul

It will be finished soon! It really has become a labour of love and also fairly expensive. Going down the full on motorsport tech route has been interesting. Will we get abuse for spending too much? Does it matter?

The axles are a very good choice for the vehicle we are building and the performance we want. But others would say different . And that is the great part of it all.

I wish we could get away from 2 things. First lets build and compete in anything we want and start to see some real innovation. Some of it will be wrong and some will be blind alley development but so what? Secondly lets stop getting bothered about how much or little people spend. I really admire people who can do things all for themselves and on a shoe string but I also have no issue with people spending money (unless they stole it off me).

Drop by if you are in the neighborhood.

PS we intend to be fully and properly road legal because we don't want to be limited to 1 day or 1 site events. And I want to drive it to the pub!

  9. Quoting Sam (Strange Rover) here who's been there and tried that :)

Been there, seen it, done it. Loads of travel, useless in the real world.

And you do only need 1 side done as the hinge essentially frees up what is a torsionally rigid U shape formed by axle and radius arms. If you did both you would have no torsional control of the axle. And that would be interesting.

  10. You can sometimes see this, particularly on hill climbs where the wheel appears to jump up & down on the slope loosing contact inbetween.

That hopping is usually because you are running high anti squat values in your rear suspension. Lift a vehicle but keep all the original suspension mounting points (trailing arms and A-frame) and you dramatically increase the anti squat.

  11. Yes, 'twas at Will not at you dear boy!

I think we met briefly at Billing, I was with Jez et al admiring your creation and trying not to look at the yellow abomination from SFS

Mmmmmm SFS. No angle iron on my buggy!!!!!

Billing? Were you in a kilt? :D drinking something dubious????

I might even be able to drive the creation soon.

  12. A good way to eat brake pads Tim? Off road give me a plain disk any day!

How's the truck going BTW? When's the finish date?

300, I can see the point you're trying to make and, yes, all companies want to make a healthy profit. However, the "rape and pillage" approach that this company employs isn't smart in what's a small market – a cat only has 9 lives. It’s a free country but, my advice to potential customers is 'Caveat Emptor' and to potential suppliers is keep well away! I know of people who've been happy with them but they seem to be in a minority.

As other's have said, the law is an ass. The likelihood of any legal action like this is it'll be long and drawn out with little chance of receiving any sort of compensation.

    Will

Not bothered about hand brakes at all just joining in! Hand brake is only applied stationary so muck eating pads is debatable.

I would never not run grooved discs elsewhere, helps the pads get rid of gas and minimise fade.

Truck will be finished before yours!! (not starting another pi**ing contest, just playing!!!) Seriously will be finished and out later this summer.
