  1. erm, I've never tried. But your observation that it's always been like that - I've also heard the same from another D2 owner...
  2. hmmm, yes, but what? Wrong fluid? Master cylinder? Discs & pads have been checked and nothing wrong there!?
  3. Hi all Is this indicative of a problem with the brakes: when I press the brake pedal it is soft with a long-ish travel, but after quick release it is then hard and the D2 slows down quicker? The brake fluid level is normal and no leakages anywhere. My mechanic says there's nothing wrong with them, but am I weird to want more stopping power :? How about something like this: Powerbrake for 4x4's?
  4. fr*ck!!! the coolant leak is back! while driving home from work on Friday night the LBB alarm came on again. Pulled into the nearest garage to check the coolant level and it was ok. Got home 10km later (doing 40kmh) and the coolant level was way down and dripping on the pavement. The coolant is definitely leaking out onto the pavement, so at least I know there's a leak somewhere. It is probably the same one I had a couple of week ago from the cracked rubber blank-off on the oil cooler (somewhere underneath the turbo heat shield). I crawled underneath the Disco and found spots of oil on the bottom of the transfer box that seem to be coming from above it. The oil is very thin, and it could be mixed with water - that's never a good sign, is it? Pretty much everything else is also coated in a thin film of oil. Can anyone take a look at these pics and let me know if this normal or not? http://picasaweb.google.com/n.sunassee/Disco2# - the last 5 pics. thanks!
  5. I'm also in the process of researching tents for an overlanding trip next yr to Botswana & Namibia. After considering the various brands, I'm tending towards a Hannibal Impi. the only problem with this setup is the weight @ 60kg, BUT one does not need a roofrack (weight of +-30kg), and forces one not to pack heavy stuff on the roof. I reckon with this kind of setup, you will end up with a COG that is lower than with a roofrack + tent + jerrycan, etc.
  6. Yebo, by Burnco. the only problem with these is that they got the dimension for the rear bumper light cluster wrong, so the standard Disco2 light cluster does not fit. Which means I am driving around with no reverse lights but with 4 indicator lights and 4 brake lights
  7. no, u are not seeing things. The farmer laid mesh on the track at this point to prevent further erosion. IIRC this is the first 4x4 trail in SA to be approved by the Dept. of Environmental Affairs
  8. Hi Martin! yep, I know this. But I'm still getting used to the D2 auto, where the 1st Low is still too fast for me compared to my previous Defender's 1st low. I did a hectic descent last yr in my Defender, with my foot on the brake pedal all the way down to control my descent and it worked fine, but that was in the dry though. see the pics:
  9. *doh* I might have left some brain cells on that track too and disconnecting the anti-sway bars? Will the extra articulation help in these conditions?
  10. Yep, allday trip. The distance from the farmhouse to the top of the mountain is approx 6km, and it takes about 2hours in these conditions. In the dry season it should be much easier & faster. Altitude is 2249m from sea level and approx 2000m from the farmhouse.
  11. Hi all We had an epic trip to Matroosberg on Sunday. I left some scrapes of the rear diff there, could even see them on the way back down the mountain! I am thinking now that I need some more ground clearance, maybe a 2inch lift? The one thing that I really liked about the D2: just put foot and the TC sorts you out. Except the one hill which was muddy and all I ended up doing was going backwards while all the wheels were driving forward. A quick reverse and 2nd Low momentum sorted that out, but it was touch and go for a few minutes  On the way back, I found it very tricky when going downhill in mud/slippery rocks because when you stand on the brakes in 1st Low, I think what happens is the ABS tries to stop you from locking up and releases the brakes selectively and I ended up slipping sideways quite a bit My white hair count has definitely gone up after this trip! Some pics from the trip: http://picasaweb.google.com/n.sunassee/Matroosberg#
  12. mine is pulling to the left under braking. My mechanic said he fixed a stuck calliper, but after a couple of weeks it's doing it again. I really cannot afford new pads + discs
  13. thanks cipx, will these fit in the park light socket then: http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.js...radeId=13154692 or http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.js...radeId=13000955?
  14. Hi all Can anyone confirm whether the front park lights on a facelift D2 are type T10? If not, what model are they? thanks!
  15. indeed. SWAMBO once packed her friends and a tent in her Freelander and went road-tripping all over Botswana, and crossed the Magadikgadi Pans without any issues. They only got stuck once because throughout the trip she didn't let down her tyres since leaving Joburg
  16. it all depends on what the old one was. Go for a battery that has a higher CCA than the previous one if possible, but don't go any lower than 79
  17. Hi guys I want to upgrade the headlights on my D2 with Osram NightBreakers. Will I have to buy 4 bulbs, i.e., 2 for main and 2 for dipped?
  18. erm, I just unbolted the terminals, positive first (as the manual said), is that bad?
  19. thanks for the advice guys. Anything special I need to do when removing/inserting the battery?
  20. Hi all My main battery has been on its way out since I got it, and I have been using the deep-cycle one to help start the engine in the morning. Came back home from a trip over Easter to find the battery has died. Unfortunately I left the aux switch on, and the deep-cycle is also flat. I'm thinking I should just replace the main battery now. What battery should I replace the main one with? Can I replace it with another deep-cycle or is that not recommended? Any advice is most welcome, thanks
  21. follow-up question - if this is normal, why does it happen? Anyone know the technical explanation? The only other diesel I drive is SWAMBO's A3, and it doesn't do that. You lift off the accelerator, and the revs drop to a smooth idle straight away. Granted, it's a 2007 model and way less tractor-like
  22. ah, I assumed that the torque converter on the D2 was designed to hold it on an incline
  23. ok, cool. no, I meant at idle. Basically I was at the top of the incline, and took my foot off the brake pedal and was expecting the car to crawl forward, like my gf's Ausi A3 TDi does, but the Disco just rolled back. scared me a bit, thank goodness there weren't any neighbours behind me!
