  1. Thanks Nigel Looks interesting stuff indeed. Will look into getting some for the bodywork. I Know its gona happen cant help it really but if i could slow it down atleast would make me worry less. Do like my waxoil though especially for the chassis find hand brushing it on very relaxing and gives a really good thick almost plastic coat effect when it drys. Use a high pressure tube blocked at the end and peirced the last 4 inches so i can pass it right into the chassis. Usually put 5ltrs on the outside and same again on the inside. Then 5ltrs of clear waxoil on the bodywork sections mentioned. Just the outside so ill see what that stuff is like might be just what i was hoping for. Cheers Scott
  2. Hi Need a wee bit advice aboot the old problem of the alloy worm eating my landy. Got my 110 its my pride and joy i love the thing spend alot of time on her and took the last month to hand brush a shed load of waxoil on her chassis aswell as the inner chassis. She has been sitting about 6 months though took her to bits to do some other restoration work and on the side the wind blows most on my drive there are the odd bubbles apperaing not much at all but the old girl had a full respray a few years back and i dont want her rotting away. Ok here is what i have done. The inner doors are getting a good dose of clear waxoil. Going to coat evrything you dont see inside or behind door cards in the clear stuff. The bulkhead is getting the same treatment on the inside behind the dash. The parts that are what i call outside meeting the selas the lower halfs of the dooors etc will get the original black waxoil you wont see it so im gona give it agood protection. Hinges have been treat in curust and then the bolts removed and replaced with galvanised then greased. Ok the bubbles i did notice not much a little bit in the area about 3 inches below the bottom of the window and a few smal bubbles at the corners of the doors. Here is my thinking say if im wrong. I rubbed of the paint sanded into the bubbles and until i can get a paint touchup pen have weekly sprayed WD40 into the efffected areas. Finallly should i get the wolf wheels sprayed or poweder coated?. I will get it sorted right but for now i gota just slow it down the old girl has a few more weeks atleast of tinkering till im happy enough to allow her to be trashed by the acid **** they spray on our roads. Id really appriciate any advice. Oh dont knolw if you mind my post on the 90td i bought well that wee girl is getting the same treatement as soon as the 110 is on the road she comes of and i have a full rebuild in store for her. Have really got into the retoration process love spending my weekends under the landys tinkering fixing and making them run good. 25-30mpg so far oots the smoky td engine .Total novice really but i do read alot and take on all tips and follow them through if proven. Cheers Scott
  3. Very interested to see how you get on with this. Watched your startup video and the smoke in the engine bay. Myne occationaly puffs from the engine bay but not yet wacthed were from. Its a lumpy startup with a fair bit of white smoke. Give it a hard rev it runs smooth. Then whilst warming up stutters and puffs when it does this. Good luck with it anyways ill be watching. Cheers
  4. Sorry to hear about your problems with the landy you bought. Totally understandable that you could check it over maybe as much as most folk would and suppose you could sau its a shame the seller did not warn you a bit more?. Anyways i kinda was in the same boat with a 90 i bought. I mean in all fairness now i think i have actually done better out of the deal by initially dropping the guys asking price by £395 after i spotted problems but all the same he also kept quiet about other problems. Funny thing is he like most folk think because its second hand you ahve no come back but in my case i did as i had the advert and when they word it oneway and the vehicle is other or more to the point unroad worthy you can have em quiet easily in court. I was gona hit him for it but in the end after a good wkend of beer and thinking i worked out i actually got the better side of the deal and weather he was trying to pull a fast one or not on me i have came away with more vehicle than i gave him money. Im gona stick with her now after doing some simple tuning and adjustments she is a hell of alot better and so far i ahve not spent anyhting. So i feel for you understand your anger and also think sellers like that ought to get shot. Good luck with the landy though.
  5. Cheers Ally V8 Very good point and taken on board. Im not rushing it now dont want or trust myself with Arc. The Van is by far the worse of the 2 and the repair done that caused this was shocking when i kicked the repair panel off nothing welded att all just stuck on with some sort of monkey spunk. One thing i ahve learned about owning transits is you get jumped on by the feds and the VOSA hit squads alot and so far none of them ahve questioned anyhting and my recent replacment reapir panel is as strong as it can be without welding. It kinda annoys me cause i know for a fact the trade hand out MOT for little money and the buckets they sell are deathtraps. Might actually look into a course for the longterm more for the landrover they wont get sold have spent far too much time on them. The transit i have to try find a welder locally and bribe him with food and beer. Good advice though cheers fella.
  6. Good point ill update my profile. Too many folk advicing me not to use the Arc getting lots of offers for a loan of one but these folk and yourselves odviously have a hell alot more experience than me. The van has been patched with a plate for now im getting the metal soon so i can atleast pre-shape it for the section required the damage is due to an old accident in the central side panel skin and lower sill joins . The landrover i took the floots out and seatbox had a poke about and nothing else needing welded really quiet pleased. So ill either pre shape the new floots ready or buy the repair panels. Thanks again and if you think you can help me i make great tea or coffe and biccys and sarnys are redily available
  7. Hi Thanks for all the tips and advice. I have to agree i am a bit concerned about useing the Arc myself never really used one but its all i can get a loan of round these parts. I have used Mig and a fair bit with Gas. I am a bit worried about blowing holes in the bodywork etc. Think best bet is as adviced do trial runs maybe try fabricate something like a box thin panels onto thicker corners etc. The landrovers my main worry i dont want to damage the bulkhead the rot was tiny about 50 pence peice worth may even just rivet a plate in place but the rear crossmember does need some small strips not much again. The van is another matter being the body outer skin its mighty thin. Ill not rush it ill test first and if im not happy ill just ahve to find a mig or gas welder on a loan. Bit broke to rent one unfortunatly. Got lots of metal though thanks to a kind lady thats likes to get dirty under her landy hehe. Thanks again
  8. HI Just about to tackle some welding on my landrovers and my ford transit van. Im kindly getting a loan of an Arc welder its rated 140amp. Useing 2.5 and 3mm rods. Simple question is the welder rated to high the landrover repairs are a very small section in the foot wells so be sheet steel or ally around 3mm. The rear crossmemeber has very small holes nothing major a few patches should sort it yet again in steel im gona go for 3mm thick here. The van is the sills so be sheet steel 2-3mm and the floor croos slats not the crossmemeber so be 2-3mm sheet steel again. Im just conserned the welder is too powerful. Any advice be appriciated. Thanks
  9. HI Ok got some good offers for wings, sills etc so the 90 is goign to get a makeover. Its gona be stripped and rebuilt i may or may not get the chassis galvanised when stripped it depends on cost something i just done know yet. Now i have just also got hold of the engine that was fitted in my trusty transit befor it died the rot death. Its the Bannanna Di 2.5 deisel just had a full makover new timing belt, valves adjusted, pump tuned the works, this engine runs super sweet for a deisel and always took me by surprise the power it had even low down in 5th gear fully loaded going up hills. Also i know how to tune them further very easily if i want a little more grunt. I know this convertion has been done and my thinking is the 90 is ideal. So im hoping there are memebers here that have this convertion done already and can point me down the right path. I also have the full old transit van so if anyhting else is required thats not an issue. Looking forward to hearing from you transit engined landy owners. Thanks Scott
  10. Here are some closeups you can see the holes on the front wings the corrosion at the bottom of the doors and the damaged sills. Few pics of the 110.
  11. Here some pics of the 90 for you. I was offered a 300tdi engine complete for £300 recently with the intention of fitting that into the 110. I have done some figures and as is if i paid that kind of money on an engine done the refit myself with the usuall new bits reccomended during the operation and giving the body a tidyup if i can find cheap front wings and doors tidy the interior a bit and make door panels ill not go above £1500. Its looking tempting. I mean im no mechanic but have done alot of work on my 110 it had alot done befor i bought it aswell full rebuild infact so im ok with getting the spanners and hammer out. I look after a transit van aswell but would i toil on my own? I think its pretty good but is it worth my while. A guy recently offered me a very clean 90td same beast basically. It ahd a load of work dlone to a very high standard and bodywise was very clean but he did state it would need a new chassis eventually and it was hitting over £1500 mot and taxed. This is were im confused as myne has a great cjhassia nd evryhting else just needs tlc and the bodywork smartened up. Ok blabbing a bit now keep the ideas coming costs and honest opinions. Sorry if the pics are a bit big tried to crop them down. Thanks
  12. Good point there Yellow aboot the 200tdi have noticed they can reach good prices. Decided to use my 110 for a month so i can park the 90 up in the drive and work on it. Took it to the local landy loving garage owner and he reakons most the smoke is a faulty injector from what i have described with a dab of worn stem valve sels thrown in for good measure and shocking timing , nothing he aint seen old taxis starting like in the mornings and nothing the local plod will annoy me about. Ill get pics taken they wont show in detail what you can see up close but ull get the idea. In its favour the bulkhead is solid along with the good chassis well solid chassis. Might give me time to get back into it just got a bit niffed at it when the hidden secrets started showing their ugly head. Its a case of do i spend money in which case i always say a landy is for life just rebuild em over and over so no real shelf life like modern 4x4 and cars then id be tempted to keep it. But you get to the point of how much do you spend compared with what you could sell it for. Ill get photos taken. Buggers though totally true you buy one and want the whole damn range. Cheers
  13. Hi Folks Bit disapointed got no replys but guess yer all to busy plus i did forget to post pics up. Anyhow i have had a change of heart now with the 90 and im gona sell it. Its a nice wee truck just not my cup of tea and ive slightly lost the intrest after being mislead. Maybe an impulse buy i should have thought about bujt i did genuingly check it over just not well enough. The 110 is more to my liking and size wise suits my needs alot better. Ok so im not selling it on without fixing most its problems. I have replaced the steering arms and tie rod ends, drop arm ball joint, power steering belt, alternator and fan belt, oil and fuel filters changed and going to be fitting new glow plugs. The engine has the signs of worn oil seals and the badly timed engine causes it to run rough when cold. Once warmed up practically no smoke so thnk its ok for a TD engine of its 112k milage. I readjusted all the wheel bearing and generally checked over evryhting else. Tyres are good chassis are a recent replacment so solid underneath and as mentioned in the first post the bodywork is a bit batered and corroded but after lookign at similar vehicles on autotrader and fleebay reakon its not bad, certanly no showroom condition but in the right hands an easy fix. It has MOT till april 09 and taxed till january 09. Gears all seem to work well and cant get it to jump out even jerking the throttle on rough ground. Difflock works and brakes are good, handbrake needs adjusted as its at the end of its pull. Exaust is recent. Usuall interior damgae of this age door panels and seats ripped. Propshafts seem good and no play. I realise its not perfect but with the excellent chassis and good running gear with a little tlc will make a good solid wee 90. Im sure the engine is fine ok once you get it warmed up and its been running a while the mentioned smoke does almost disapear and im certain the timing has a huge amount to play but cant proove this till the belts etc are changed. Im thinking selling as spares or repiar due to this reason what do you think? Cant really figure out a price seen some silly asking prices on what i class buckets with poor chassis etc and no MOT. Just want to do it right. Quiet confident a real landy owner would see my point if they test drove it and i would make a point of going a good 20-30 miles show im not hiding things. This does not mean ill bugger off my much loved 110 is about to go through a major overhall as im taking it to norway next year and driving the whole way so its time to treat the old girl well and ill no dought be asking you lots of advice on her. Im a bit bad for random vehicle buys but this one i think could work in my favour. The guy i bought it off was totally dihonest and claimed to know nothing about the minor hidden issues and leaving a landy sitting for a month or so goes a long way to hiding problems even after a good long test drive. Im not going to be like that i know its problems and am quiet happy to take my time over selling it right. I would appriciate help and advice this time i wont sell it on ebay and prefer it goes to someone that otherwise needs a solid landy with minor work required to get it there. It will come with all the spares required to achive this. I class it more as a fully rolling chassi bar the engine but if your happy with a smoky landy on startup and till warm might be ok for farm work or estates etc but i cant have this and yes im comparing it too much to my 110 which is fully restored now. So what do you think? Is it worth my while keeping or should i sell it on as spares or repair or should i consider breakign it. What would you do. Money not really an issue i can afford to sort her to the standard i like but if you dont love a vehicle whats the point.
  14. Use lots and lots of swearing, threats and as many cups of tea as is allowed. Myne was a nightmare, got nuts of no probs then ball joint was sezied into drop arm thumped droparm a few times with a 50lb hammer it soon fell out. getting the inards out was ok the top cup was a nightmare. Was so worn the lip you use to press out was inline with the droparm. Used a 11/16th socket peice of standard quality it pushes through with a small bench vice and then once past the droparm section spread and caught the cup and pushed it right out. Very lucky to get it out at all. Pushing new cup. cup in place 21mm socket so no chance of damaging roller surfaqce and jacked vehicle up via droparm. Then viced the jack and droparm and tightened up whilst smacking vice with ahmmer and the added weight of the landy and she popped back in. Put evrything back together and what a hell of a diffrence. Now just got to do it again with the landy thats off the road getting restored it looks a mnuch healthier job though all the same got my trusty arsenal of hammers vices and brute forse.
  15. Hi Just signed up here bought myself a G plate 90 td pickup. Chassis are new and lots of other work done but she is a bit tatty not a huge problem but i want a bit advice on how to go about smarting her up a bit. Most is the old aluminium rot around sills and creeping up doors etc. Few small holes and bit banged but was a farm vehicle. Im tempted to just panel over the rubbish and in a few years replace the whole body or try find one now? what you reakon what kind of costs am i looking at etc. The Td engine is strong enough and actually pulls well compared to my 110td but is a bit smoky blue smoke that disapears once warmed up. Gone fiddle with the timing first also needs a new pully damper. Not useing oil and mpg is ok.turbo seems to be working well. Has some sort of alloys on them reconise them but cant put the vehicle to it but i gona reaplce them prefer steel. pitty good tyres anaw.Fancy another set of wolf. Any adviec be great as my 110td is generally mint condition for its age and is a bit pampered but i do want the 90 to last just as long. What should i do first were should i buy from or have you got anyhting i could use. Ill try get some pictures taken this wkend if it ever stops raining. Cheers
