  1. I see they recommend to change the spigot bush as well (an extra £1.50 so will do). Anything else I should do whilst I am at it? Is the crankshaft seal easy to do whilst changing the clutch or should I leave alone if it's not leaking? Don't want to introduce a problem that wasn't there!

Going to stick with the DMF. I can get the whole genuine clutch kit and DMF for only £60 more than the Britpart clutch kit and solid fly wheel. It's lasted this long so I'm happy to stick with it for that difference. If it lasts 8 years (80,000 miles at my current rate) I'll be happy. This one has done well, it hasn't had an easy life since I got it four years ago!

I say me, I'll be letting the local garage fit it for me. One job I don't want to do myself.

  2. Hi all,

I think my clutch may finally be on the way out (finally) having done 155,700m.

When I'm coasting in gear (so no throttle) or in low box and engine braking down hill there's a dull chattering sound. Stops when you put the clutch down, starts when you let it out, and if you rest your foot lightly on the clutch peddal I think theres a bit of a pulsing in time with the chattering (quite quick, like a stone in your tyre at 30mph sort of speed). As I say, the chatter is dull, like a ball bearing in a wooden box. Probably noticed it more today because I had teh window down and was green laning.

I suspect it might be the duall mass flywheel? Is that a typical sound for them when they have failed?

Am I ok to carry on driving until it packs up, then call the AA  as I can't really afford it just now. Unless it's definiately the clutch/flywheel and it's gonna kill something else when it fails completely, then I'm happy to stick with it for a few weeks. As I'm not woirking at the moment I have time on my hands but not much cash!

My freelander clutch exploded and put a whole in the gearbox casing, thankfully under warranty, but obviously I don't want to cause that sort of damage again. I reckon the Disco is made of stronger stuff though.

Also, who has fitted a single flywheel instead of a dual mass? Has it made any difference to the transmission/vibration/gear change etc? Is it true that you have to buy the flywheel and clutch from the same manufacturer each time?

I don't think I need a heavy duty clutch as I'm happy enough with 155000 miles out of the original clutch to be honest. I will most likely go for a genuine one again, but if I can use a genuine clutch with a normal flywheel I may consider that as a cheaper option right now.

    Cheers, Martin

  3. Thanks for the link but they are more than I want/need to spend. Also they are forward facing and I want a side facing seat for a few reasons.

The D1 seat would be perfect, I can make it fit. I don't have any mounting points available to me at the moment so I'll be starting from scratch anyway.

There's one locally so I think I'm sorted.

    Cheers though, Martin

  4. Thanks anyway Ron. Now I know there were some I'll find one second hand...eventually. Or I'll just crack and end up paying for a new one from James's link above

Teabag, they did do one for the D2. Link above. The PCD for the D1 and D2 wheels are different so a D1 cover wouldn't fit (already thought of that). I do have 16" wheels on my D2. Can't find a universal supplier for the disc type rim cover. Don't like the cheapy black pull-on covers, may as well use a bin bag

    Cheers, Martin

  5. Cheers Ron, would be appreciated if you could.

James, I'm just not keen on the full wheel covers to be honest, hence why I took mine off and sold it Might end up with one with a big red North Face decal on it though

    :D

  6. Anyone know if they ever made a rim cover for teh TD5 like they used to with the earlier Discos?

I'd like one as my steel wheels get a lot of spray/salt etc and teh spare hung on the rear door has suffered badly over the winter for not having a cover.

Sounds a bit vain, but I prefer the look of the vehicle without the full black wheel covers though! Actually I like the look of it without a spare at all but that's just me perhaps lol.

Like this one, but for a TD5:

  7. As I am now keeping teh Disco, I've been working through some of teh "problems" that I used to try and make selling it easier. Fuel economy is sorted (for a while anyway) since they've dropped 10p of a litre near me! And I'm going for AT's and emptied the junk out I was carrying. The other issue was not having enough seats some of the time (very rare occassions).

I've been doing a bit of research and think I can put a folding seat in the back of my Disco, similar to the side facing seats found in a defender. In fact JUST like a folding side facing seat found in a Defender

Anyway, according to the MOT regs:

    3. Side facing seats

Side facing seats are not required to be fitted with seat belts.

    4. Occasional seats

Occasional seats that fold down when not in use are not required to be fitted with seat belts. Care must be taken in assessing whether seats are, by manufacture, intended for everyday use with the ability to be folded for extra luggage space or intended for occasional use. Seats for everyday use should not be considered as “occasional” seats.

    6. Seats in goods vehicles

Seats fitted to the rear of the driver’s compartment in a goods vehicle are not required to be fitted with seat belts unless the seat is the specified front passenger seat

This isn't going to be a seat for regular use. Mostly if we are heading from the campsite to a crag 10 minutes away, or dropping a mate at the train station for example. Or for me to sit and cook in teh back when it's raining

I know the insurance company will need to know, I guess it will be a 2 seater + occassional seat (that'll probably cause problems :glare: ). What about my V5. Would it still be 2 seats do you think?

Anyone done similar? I still need to figure out mounting of the seat so any ideas/pics would be helpful if you have :i-m_so_happy:

  8. I noticed a very small improvement pulling out of junctions. No more power or economy, but just seemed less lag when pulling off. Dunno if it was worth it or not if I'm honest, but again, that's on a TD5. Might make more difference on a 300tdi?

  9. On my TD5 teh EGR was clean and working even though I have removed it, but when I flushed the intercooler it was pretty mucky!

You are supposed to flush them every 48k on the TD5, think mine had missed three...

Just saying, might not be the EGR, might just be years of sludge?

  10. Not sure, just found this pic on another forum/photobucket. Will google US though, see what comes up. Actually I have friends in the US so will forward the pic to them. Might be in Wal-Mart or similar

  11. Thanks, my front rims are in desperate need of doing because of off-roading. The rears are ok as it happens.

Will probably get the laquer as well, just for a bit extra protection. Should be picking some up later so will take some pics.

    Cheers, Martin

  12. I used my Wilko's garden srayer yesterday for filling my transfer box with 75W/90 and it did the job, , just rather slowly.

I have just come across this pump when searching for MTF (yup, gearbox next) and was wondering if anyone has found a UK supplier of them? This one is from the states I think.

Thought it would be better than emptying my garden sprayer, cleaning, refilling with different oil etc. Would make servicing even quicker and easier if you just drop one end in the display packaging, the other end in your gearbox/diff etc.

    Cheers, Martin

  13. I wouldn't bother. I have gone pretty mad in my D2 over the years and not had diff guards fitted and haven't put a hole in one yet.

If you are careful, as you say you will be, then you should be able to avoid most things hitting the diff pan. And if you have the stock front bumper on that'll be what gets broken first

  14. Thanks, didn't spot the "steel" one, that might be just what I'm after.

Had a look on the webiste, it recommends laquer over the top.

Did you bother? If so/not has it proven pretty durable?

I'll be doing my rims with the tyres off, but for the future touching up the cardboard idea is a good one.

I've wire brushed the first rim, used some rust convertor and then used some "industrial grey primer" that I got from toolstation a while ago. This primer is good in that it "fills" better than most, so covers quite a lot of deep marks and wire brush scratches.

    Cheers, Martin
