Assuming everything is in great condition to begin with, I would take: Propsahft UJ's, track rod ends & a couple of wheel bearings, not including service items. The list of spares you could possibly take could go on forever. Depends on how adept you are at fitting all the parts when something breaks. You could take a trailer with enough spare parts to build a whole new Defender, but if you dont know how to fit every single one yourself, then there is no point. Generally limit your spares to those parts that can guarantee forward motion.
There are 2 trains of thought regarding LR suspension for overlanding, namely the standard is good enough to get you anywhere in the world adequatley; or upgrade to something better. I personally think the latter is the better of the 2 options - the standard set-up will probably make it in one piece, but a good suspension upgrade can make your vehicle more comfortable & capable & maybe better your chances of completing the trip without anything going wrong.
A set of Koni dampers and a set of Old Man Emu springs is a match made in heaven for a heavily laden overland vehicle. If you do upgrade your suspension, then keep a couple of the old dampers to take as spares.

hi not puttin you off ugrading your suspension. just a thought to consider when upgrading. buy parts that you can also get in other countries. if you brake a damper thats for a 2'' suspension lift for example. can u get that part where ever else your going?
just something to consider.
hope that helps.

hi,muddy4x4xfar, i have seen something on here somewhere how to test your swivel ball pre loads and i think they used fisherman scale's is that possible if so what would be the correct pressure for the preload, axles are off the motor at the moment complete as i am rebuilding my defender 90, cheer's defender dinky
ye thats right it should measure between 1.16kg and 1.46kg it maybe slightlyover if youve just put new seals on (just until they bed in.
-
hi, do i jack the corners up and remove wheels on both sides, thanks for your reply, defender dinky
hi yes you you do need road wheels off and then test it, and just do it to which ever side your working on.

hi does anyone know where i could get the interlock solenoid from which was put on the discovery 2 auto transmissions in america.
????????
-
hi so £300 sounds good from a certain point.?
-
i agree ashcroft transmissions are excellent.
-
stick a spring balance on where the track rod joins to the swivel housing. keeping it horizontal and floating. pull the swivel housing unit using the spring balance . it should measure 3 on the spring balance but if its a new seal they sometimes measure just over . thats cause it needs to bed in.

hi so on average how much does it cost to do the porting.

hi im on with a project 110 defender its also got a galvanised chassis. i wanted it to be galvanised then black coated. i went to a auto paint shop and they also recommended hammerite paint. painted over the top of a primer. if you give it a good couple of coats with the primer and a few tins of hammerite paint it will be fine. iv done it that way and it looks awsome.
