  1. I've been discussing this with a mate who's been into disco's for a long time.... his verdict, get some disco extended arches. Don't bother with defender arches. It's a case of how much do you value your time? I'm sure it can be done. one way or another. Say it takes you 4/5 hours to do an extended disco arch kit (or longer whoever has fitted one). That is: your time plus kit (150 quid ish). How long is a defender arch kit going to take to fit? even if you got it FOC?!? Somebody will have done it somewhere. I hope you find the answer you want mate.
  2. I use a garage at wombwell (off J36 M1) for my discovery and so does most people who I go off roading with. Top bloke, knows his stuff and is reasonable. Daniel Sykes 01226 805613 07967 725421
  3. Thanks for the replys. I wouldn't say it was rough or any noiser but somethings not right. I didn't check the valve clearances when I rebuilt it. Wished I had now. I'll do a compression test and take it from there. I forgot to say I changed the turbo, I fitted a boost gauge and checked the pressure... 15 psi. Thanks
  4. When I bought my disco it had done 113k, it's a 1997 R reg 300tdi. I bought it, put some offroad tyres on it and went to a play day... where I got stuck in some water without a snorkel, result; hydrolock After much investigation I had bent a rod. So I changed the bent rod, using the original shells and it starts and runs fine. Ive done 3k miles since doing this with no problems or any dreaded 'knock' from the crank (which I thought I would get) so good so far Since this mishap the engine seems reluctant to rev past approx 3200rpm whilst on the road (in high box). There's plenty of power available upto these revs on the road and revs fine whilst in low box. But... It just doesn't want to rev like it did before on the road. I.E up a steep hill in 2nd or 3rd. Things ive checked and done: Full service, all filters, new oil (twice), cleaned sedimentor. New gearbox/transferbox oil and diff oils. One of the injectors was knackered so changed (just the one). Could the other injectors not be 100%? Causing it not rev properly? It's as if it wants to go, like hitting flat spots through the rev range after 3200rpm. I can live with it but it's just doing my nut knowing it's not spot on Any ideas? Cheers Dave.
  5. Expanding foam works a treat, squirt it in... let it go off, trim with a hacksaw blade Dave.
  6. Thanks for the replies. Very constuctive Im running them at road pressure while offroad. I suppose I could lower them. It's all pretty similar vehicles I go with, disco's and defenders. No hybrids or anything. Im considering going for 265/75/16's and getting wide arches. A few of the lads have these on their discos with insa turbo specials and they seem to work well. I'm not the only one struggling with these tyres. My mates got a disco with a 2" lift and 235/70/16 insa dakars. He's struggling in the same places as me. His is an auto. Muddy: I'm starting to think perhaps it's the profile more than anything. Just not getting clearance in the ruts. Although it doesn't explain me struggling where there isn't ruts. Ashtray: They've done about 6 playdays and a few greenlaning days so don't have much wear. The recip 3d tyres look about the most extreme offroad/road legal tyre there is. I bet they are a knightmare on the road though. I only drive to pay and play days and greenlaning starts so it's not too much of an issue, but I reckon they'd rattle fillings out Thanks for the help, much appreciated:D
  7. Right. I got some insa turbo dakars for my disco, which at first seemed ok in the mud and loose gravel. But now ive found my off road feet they just don't seem to have the grip I need. My question is: Is there any tyres that give better traction for the money than insa turbo special track's? I've spoke to few people and they seem to think there isn't a better tyre (for traction) for the money. I'm not bothered road noise, just traction. 265/75/16 60 quid + VAT from paddocks. http://www.paddockspares.com/sp/category/W...cial_Track.html The ones i've seen and am considering are the recip's, probably the 3d's http://www.mailorder4x4.com/acatalog/RECIP...ould_Tyres.html Anybody got any of these and recommend them or any others?
  8. There's an electrical connection on the back of the alternator, it's where the revs are read. Give it a nip with some pliers, sound's like it could've come loose.
  9. I want to upgrade the intercooler on my 97 300tdi disco. Does anybody know what intercoolers fit from other manufacturers? I think i've seen saab and iveco mentioned while doing searches? Obviously it's to do with where the pipes sit. Has anybody fitted an oem intercooler from another manufacturer? I want to upgrade to a bigger intercooler but like to do it without shelling out £300 plus for an aftermarket alloy one. Has anybody got any experiences/suggestions what will fit? Many thanks
