True, but one possible solution. I remember dynamos and seems amazing now alternators were a breath of fresh air. The dynamos themselves are quite reliable and easy to fix, the cotrol boxes were cantankerous. Maybe there are solid state controllers these days.
I remember helping my dad change the brushes on many of the dynamos on his old, junk cars. When I started my apprenticeship in the late '70's, they were, more or less, a thing of the past. My first 2A had a dynamo, but I converted to alternator as I fitted an electric winch to it. Currently in the process of reviving a '67 2A, which also has a dynamo, which has had a 'refresh'. It remains to be seen whether the regulator is operational, I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

If authentic appearance matters you can get alternators that look like dynamos eg link, dynalites. The dynamos aren't normally too bad, brushes are the usual thing, but those control boxes....
Wow, very spendy!

A very quick mobile engine test rig knocked up this morning
A trailer chassis I had laid doing nothing
Fit jockey wheel, mag drill helping out
lifting operations off table in garage
Some quick engine mounts
engine and gearbox fitted, sitting nice and level
I can add brackets to this to hold temp fuel tank, ignition and whatever else I might need
now the dreaded electrics.......
Regards Stephen
Looking forward to hearing it make noise.

I am a bit disappointed you didn't machine it from a 2 foot solid cube piece you had lying about.
...... and I'm just wowed by the fact that he managed to cast a blank using a cooking pot and bits of scrap that was 'lying around'. Incredible, as usual, Stephen. 👍

Brilliant work, Stephen. Looks like a lovely finish on that flywheel. What did you decided to do for bolting the flywheel to the crank, or isn't it decided yet?

With regards the park brake, it’s unusual to have a jockey wheel, most cargo type trailers just have a jacking so brakes aren’t really needed. Boat trailers tend to have jockey wheels but there short so I ended up getting the one I used from Amazon…. It actually came from Stoke-on-Trent.

Just a little update. The noise ended up being a transfer-box input gear bearings. They were worn. Replaced with new bearings and cross drilled input gear in situ and it is a lot quieter. There is faint main shaft bearing noise in a gearbox but its ok for time being. When I get round to stripping second hand box I will replace all bearings and then put it in a landy. Thanks everyone for help and pointing me in a right direction
Wow, that bearing was in a bad way!

Hello!
I've just changed the weeping fuel tank on the 1974 SWB SIII. When swapping the fuel pick up and return pipes over to the new tank I noticed that the tubes that dangle in the tank were the same length. (Long in case anyone was wondering 😉)
Is this a problem?
The car has worked OK(ish) so far. But LR would not have made the return in tank pipe short if there was no reason.
Cheers
Rich
Shouldn't be a problem, it just means the fuel is returning to the bottom of the tank.

Decisions, decisions, what do you guys think
Was looking at the front of Sid and thought I could lose a whole load of weight by fitting a low line winch, cue new Rhino winch and also improve my approach angle a wee bit
Without warn 8274
with mocked up Rhino low line
Weight would be mainly lost with a new lighter bumper, as I'm thinking of putting the 8274 into the rear
regards Stephen
I have the same winch on my series, Stephen. Whilst I mainly use it for mild self-recovery and recovery of others on lanes and such, I have to say it has worked well for me so far. I have replaced the wire cable with a synthetic rope.

If it's leaking fuel, it could be the injector pipe union or leak-off leaking?

Did you get this resolved? I have the same problem !
G
I doubt you'll get a reply, he has only ever posted 5 times.
My advice would be to find Landyman Lukes post, which is very useful, and diagnose as described. My two pennies worth? The hazard switch is notorious for creating issues with the indicators and replacing it shouldn't hurt, assuming you can find one of reasonable quality. Try PA Blanchard for a replacement part.

That's a great relief.

Should be working now. Apologies for the disruption!
Thanks, James, I use the files all the time and have missed them not being available. 👍

Sid had a modest 20yrd run, moved from previous position of the last several months, steering seems a bit heavy but I suspect box is not great, I have another one I can try
No massive oil leaks, knocks or bangs, yes I know its early days but I'm very happy
Now he is moving its just the right motivation to crack on and get finished
regards Stephen
That looks so 'right' 🥰

I bought 2 of these 52mm jobs to be able to monitor the transfer process as well as wanting a reasonably contemporary looking gauge for the main tank with a more useful display area...
My buddy is doing a lot of wood machining just now and driving me nuts with the sawdust. Anyway, about £12 each from AliExpress as I recall. Double that for taxes and carriage and wait 3 weeks and there you go. It's actually tolerably well made and seems to work well in bench testing. Gets a bit jittery at very low fuel level, but so do I. It talks to your phone over wifi, I connected to it without any problems. You get a table of numbers where you type in the sender resistance for empty, 1/4 - - - up to full. Empty and full easy to measure and I've guestimated the intermediate points. Once I have a running engine I'll fill the main tank 20 litres at a time and do a precise setup. Similary with Mr Wonky up front. We'll see how it works out in practice.
So, if you search or wifi fuel gauge on AliExpress and you'll find them all over the place.
This is who I bought from:
Holler if any problem.
Excellent, thank you.

Yup - I've bought a pair of cheapo programmable jobs with a 270⁰ sweep. I'll post some notes on those if anybody's interested.
Yes please.

Are those the manuals on Retroanaconda.com??
I couldn't open the Defender one earlier,
Yes, Ralph. Do you think the problem lies at James' end? Would make sense as the 2A manual is hosted elsewhere.

Hi Ralph,
The Links to connect to the the parts books and WSM's for Series and Defender appear not to be working. The only one that appears still to work is the S2A parts book. Any ideas?

Well it's back together and running. It looked a bit smokey when I booted it which it wasn't before but it was dark and in car headlights, I'll see what it's like tomorrow.

They always look worse in that scenario. I think you notice the 'haze' picked up by the lights of the vehicle behind.

All the plants are in the mould now plus the first two coats of wax.
The silver is foil tape I've used it to cover the exposed MDF, you can also use sanding sealer/knotting (two coats min) or durabuild/2k high build. As the whole thing is going to be painted I'm not to worried about finish, there'll be plenty of filler later anyway. Next is plasticine radius on all the internal corners followed by four more coats of wax.
Mike
Very interesting to witness this being done by a pro'.

🫢 Embarrasingly, Stephen, I haven't done anything, apart from lose all the photos I took when we first got the vehicle. I have taken quite a number of photos since the rebuild started and will continue to do so. I suppose I could do thread 'when I get time'.
