If you have to fit a winch, buy a s/h X9, fit a BOW 1 on it, give me a shout for a new motor to shaft connector (I have the last few), strip it, clean it, replace the motor bearings, be amazed at the gear set.

Tempted to dust off my old X9 with that recommendation!

  2. Just caught sight of this, .... did it once with my Ifor (which you saw), and an 8ft .... which was only 7ft wide. The thing which catches you out is that the COG of the load is 4ft up and that made it borderline with the 8ft. It would be trouble with anything bigger or heavier.

  3. So, working on the right hand side of the engine at the moment,....

This oval hole (below) has a rubber bung which is long past it's prime and I would like to replace it.  I cannot find the plate or the bung in my parts book, either in the engine section or the gearbox/transmission section. Neither can I find it on the Classic JLR site, ideas welcome. Photo from below facing rearwards....

  4.   Well, having got it all dismantled now I can see that I used the self same parts on the last occasion and it is clear that the manifold has been blowing at the heatshield....  looking at the part numbers they all  supercede to the later number in each case and mine would be the later one in any case. I have two choices, no heatshield and just use gaskets or try and add thickness to the heatshield somehow?

  5. Had a little job in the offing for a while now,... want to change out the exhaust manifold for one with a lower mileage turbo. And while I have created the space, check on one or two other issues around that area. To that end I ordered gaskets some time ago.  Elring.

The first two cylinders incorporate a heat shield, and the gaskets there are entirely metallic. The other 4 are individual gaskets and are a much thicker composite sandwich. There is a difference in thickness of 0.6mm which seems a lot to me? Anyone come across similar issues?

  6. Interesting... just done a quick search and the particular one we use isn't available, but there are at least a dozen new products that weren't there a year ago when we first looked.

  7. The old cordwood saw is unlikely to be 'tipped' at all, it isn't even likely to be HSS and filing is perfectly usual. One problem is that modern files are essentially disposable now. Best tip I have for that job is to buy a graded set from Bahco or the like and treat it a bit like a chainsaw, even the teeth up with the course and medium files and put the alternate 'set' on them and then put an 'edge' on  them with the fine file. A fairly large round file will help keep the gullet shape going

Work smart, set the blade up on a table/bench, with a pin or bearing to rotate on and set guides at the outside radius to help with repeatability. Keep your hands off the files, wear gloves, modern files hate being handled. Time in set up massively reduces time spent sharpening. If you have a lot to do, try and get a second blade, use the set up to do two then you can keep working for longer. HTSH

  8. This is where working by yourself gets tough, having Elbekko and the knowledge that's on here is such a boon, fingers are crossed on your behalf in this house, and I am sure many others. 🤞

  9. Thanks, interesting link, but I think it is probably the UK version. Anyhow ***SOLVED*** it , just now !!!!

I watched a couple of generic Samsung/Android vids on youtube and one thing that came up was updating the Apps installed, I can't see how it changes anything, but 53 apps just updated themselves (that must be all of them just about!) and with a restart all seems good, hooray. One app somewhere must have been blocking something?

Thanks everyone for your support, appreciated.

Try to wrangle out of them *why* you need an update

I will go back to them today, previously they have told me that it is mainly Samsung phones affected, and it is something Samsung did, which I am taking means they altered the Android OS in some way?? My phone runs fairly straight Android with very little overlay by Doogee.

If you ring Vodafone, explain the problem

I am not a Vodafone customer, I don't think they would send me anything? Tesco Mobile is piggybacked onto the Vodafone network

  11. I have a Doogee S96 Pro, I think its about 3 years old now. runs Android 10.

Just recently i got a message from Tesco mobile (Ireland, it is different, but not sure how) saying that if I was having trouble with mobile data (now refuses to connect) to get in touch. It seems that Samsung have altered something and the data settings need tweaking.

I have been on to Tesco customer service and put in all the recommended tweaks to the access point names, and no joy at all.

If I look at system updates the last is 2021,  security updates  simply says up to date, not seeing anything amiss, but also not clear that my phone has recently downloaded anything?

This afternoon I went into the store and updated the SIM, it swapped over very easily but made no difference.

For my roadtrip tomorrow it looks like I will be using my UK SIM on 'Roaming' which btw works perfectly in the same phone and is unaffected.

Any thoughts? I read something about clearing cache, but not sure how to access it, elsewhere there is loads of memory free, Tesco just tell me I need to update the phone, but reluctant to do that unless absolutely necessary. Any ideas welcome.

  12. Update.... Amazon let me down, I am still waiting for one parcel (Their deliveries seem extended after Christmas?) In the meantime I had also ordered the cheapest BECM from ebay £53, .... (£84 by the time Pitney Bowes had added it's bit on).

That turned up and I opened it up and was delighted to find it as clean as anything inside, so plan B was to swap in my logic board, which I did, and 30 mins later the car ran faultlessly,... chuffed with that.

So if anyone else runs into a similar problem, that is a good solution. When Amazon gets here, I will swap in a good relay to my old BECM  and file it away in a plastic bag, in case of future need.

  13. Update,... had a close look at these relays and the covers can't be removed (at least not tidily) unless you take the relay off the board. I have treated myself to a new soldering iron from Amazon and will try my hand at desoldering when it gets here (Friday) more anon.
