that'll be this one http://www.lrseries.com/shop/product/listing/10944/RTC5628-IGNITION-COIL-V8-ELECTRONIC.html?
can't find a ballast resistor on that site for V8 engines.
Thanks again for your help. I will give it a try and hope for the best! Incidentally whereabouts in Cornwall are you based? I used to work in St.Austell years ago and lived in Truro.

my Defender workshop manual says.
coil --- AC Delco with ballast resistor
primary resistance @ 20degree C -- 1.2 to 1.4ohms
consumption ignition on @ 2000rpm -- 1 amp
Thanks for the prompt reply! I have been offered an RTC5628R coil locally as a spare. Do you know whether or not it incorporates an internal ballast?

My Defender V8 (exported to Bolivia new in '99) is fitted with a 35DLM8 distributor. The voltage to the coil is 12v. I am assuming that the ignition coil has an internal ballast resistor. Am I right or should I start worrying?

I am considering fitting a Weber conversion and Double S sport exhaust system to my Defender V8. Any comments from anyone with experience of either, or both, conversions would be appreciated.

I own a Defender Puma which I purchased new in Chile in June of last year. On a trip to La Paz in Bolivia earlier this year there was a noticeable reduction in power and some evidence of exhaust smoke while crossing the Altiplano at 4000m plus but otherwise the engine ran well. The day after arrival in La Paz at around 3600m with the engine cold it smoked heavily from the exhaust on start up with a marked reduction in power, both symptoms improving as the engine reached normal operating temperature.
Any observations or suggestions with regard to alterations or modifications that should be made for high altitude operation would be appreciated.

I have tried the RTC5628R and everything seems OK. My concern now is that both coils run VERY hot. Is this normal?
