This post appeared on LRO forum last week, anout led indicator post fitting problems & how to cure it, ---- http://forum.lro.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=98620

I had seen that solution elsewhere (though the LRO poster explains it very well) but was looking for a cheap plug and play cure which is why I went the Matchless Clueless route.

I think that Bolt on Bits and other suppliers of the LED kits should really put something in the kit to explain the indicator problem instead of leaving their customers to reasearch themselves. (that's probably how they manage to get such a high price for their solution)

  2. Update on this.

The item took a while to arrive, I didn't realise that the motorcycle club concerned is not UK based! However when It did arrive it was simple to fit and has worked faultlessly since. While waiting for it to arrive I simply removed the bulb from the warning light.

I am not sure what Bolt on bits provide but all that is required is a couple of diodes and some connectors so I have no idea how BOB justify the price.

  3. HI

I am on the verge of ordering a galv chassis to go under my Defender. My plan is to rent some space with a lift so that the body comes off in one piece and straight back on the new rolling chassis. As it will cost me money if the job is held up at any point I thought I would ask if anyone has done this and can recommend what other parts I'm likely to need to have to hand to change during the process.

    Thanks

    Mark

  4. This seems to be the way with almost anything Defender at present, I swapped my 110 roof recently and left the old one leant up in the yard (I was going to move it honest), the predictable happened and it fell over and smashed the sunroof. I thought that it must be scrap but her indoors stuck it on facebook and sold it in minutes.

Hi all, I took the easy way out and fitted a warning light from RDX, this has a separate earth and solved the issues I had.

Thanks for the replies as It saved me a lot of time, I don't know how long it would have been before I figured it out on my own.

It would be helpful if RDX mentioned this in their instructions or even supplied a light with the kit as it must be a common problem or they would not have warning lights on the shelf.

Resurrection of an old topic I know, but I have just done the bolt on bits LED upgrade and have the same issue, as Crofter says it would be helpful if they put some info about this in the kit.

I rang them and they said "oh yes we know all about it and sell a kit to fix it". However their kit is £15 (plus delivery no doubt) which I thought expensive for what is probably a bulb holder, an led bulb and two diodes. Shopping around revealed this on a motorcycle site

Now ordered and I will review once fitted.

  6. I did the swap on my 200tdi 2 years ago and I agree with Neil, the more you can do to the new one beforehand the better, including making sure all threads are re tapped.

Resist the temptation to get too many helpers when you are removing the old one, when they leave you will be left guessing what they took from where.

I did mine on the vehicle and realistically the bulkhead was removed and replaced in a weekend and then it took 5 afternoons / evenings to get everything refitted and do the re wiring for aux lights etc.

There were no real issues with getting the replacement to fit.

  7. On a Discovery, they go through the gear box bell housing too. I'm not sure about on a Defender (I have a Discovery unit in my 109), but I suspect it's similar.

Thanks Snagger, I'm told that on a Defender they are only accessible with the box off, guess I will need to look less any body with a 200tdi Defender knows for a fact?

Sump drain and off, undo the two bolts securing the pump to the block and lower it out. Refitting will need a new gasket.

Sounds simple, what can go wrong LOL

  8. The ladder is only held on by three more sump type bolts and the four rear bolts through the bell housing. It'd take five minutes to remove, and with cleaning up the joints before adding sealant, ten minutes to refit.

Thanks for this Snagger, don't the rear bolts need the gearbox to be dropped before they are accessible?

  9. Thanks I appreciate the replies.

I agree that the crank bearings are a likely cause, but as I have a spare engine to be rebuilt I'm just looking for some improvement in oil pressure to keep this one going without having to remove the ladder.

Does any one know if the procedure for an 'in situ' oil pump change detailed some where?

    thanks again Mark

  10. Apologies if this is covered else where but I have searched to no avail.

My 200 tdi has poor oil pressure and I have a spare engine to be rebuilt as cash allows.

In the mean time I thought it might be an idea to invest £50 in an oil pump. Question is can I fit the pump by just removing the sump with the engine in situ or does the ladder have to come off?

    Thanks
