  1. Hi all, I am in need of a pair of series 3 rear brake back plates to finish my back axle rebuild & was wondering if they are the same as the ones on my drum braked Defender? If so, is the Disco, disc braked axle a straight swap for my Defender? As i was thinking, Disco axle with discs into Defender, freeing up the back plates for the series 3. Cheers for any info, Terry.
  2. Thanks Rich, I realised that after i posted. A classic case of opening my mouth without my brain engaged. Terry.
  3. Hi again guys, Just a thought but do I need to retain the underseat toolbox, or can it be left open like the centre section? Cheers, Terry.
  4. Cheers Guys, looks like i'm in need of two underseat boxes then. Thanks for your help. Terry.
  5. Hi all, was won dering if anybody could help with pannel identification on my series 3,88" or if there is an exploded view of body pannels available. I aquired it in kit form, with all the floor stripped out for chassis painting & i think i have a few bits missing under the seat box.I have one piece that has been cut, i assume to remove rust that i think came from under the passenger seat.(see pic) What else should there be under the seat box? And can anybody identify these bits, i cant see them in the L/R Manual anywhere (18" long, alloy). Cheers for any help, i didn't realise how hard putting a pile of unidentified bits together could be, cheers again, Terry.
  6. Hi Western, Sorry, only just seen your post about trolley. Sreies 3 now back at home,my driveway was the biggest problem but got it up there in the end. You are welcome to come round & have a look any time. I hear Newnham park was a good event? Cheers, Terry.
  7. Hi all, new to series 3, Just aquired, amazingly, a series 3, in very good condition, free!!!! I was parked up out side Halfords in my Defender truck cab & this nice old guy knocked on the window asking if i knew any Landrover enthusiasts? He said he had bought it to restore but had run out of time & was 78 years old. It has loads of new parts, too many to list & been in his garage for the last 20 years. There is also parts that i dont have a clue where they go, although the manual is helping. Anyway, Mel, the previous owner says he has all the missing bits somewhere. The bits needed to get it running are a 2 1/4 petrol distributor, although Mel says he has one & a rear axle hub, complete, which he can't find at the moment. If anybody has any free, cheap series 3 bits going, give us a shout. Would love to get it back on the road for, A) my weekend transport, B) for Mel (previous owner) to be able to drive his dream!!!!. Cheers, Terry.
  8. Hi Thierry, I have a similar problem with mine. I have traced it to the front prop, which, although i changed the u/j's is still vibrating under power at about 45 - 50 mph. I removed the front prop & ran it in difflock with no vibration. On fitting the prop again the vibration is back so either the prop or u/j's are needing replacing. Try running it in difflock without your front prop fitted & see if the vibration stops. Cheers, Terry.
  9. Hi all, changed the u/j's on my front prop & there seems to be about a millimeter play in both directions as if they are too narrow. I can squeeze the cups in to take up the play but then they are not tight against the circlips & will probably just throw out again. They were Bearmach BUJ6AR. Are there different sizes? or have the yokes on the prop spread apart? Cheers for any help, Terry.
  10. Thanks snagger, i dont intend to drive it, just needed some way of rolling it onto a trailer, Cheers, Terry. Simonb, if i knew how i would atatch it i wouldn't have asked. I was just after some constuctive advice, not sarcasm!!! Cheers
  11. Hi all, Just been given a series 3 (stored in a garage for the last 20 years)& need to get it home on a trailer as it has been partly stripped. The back axle is out & in peices & it's up on blocks. Would a defender axle fit just to roll it onto a trailer? Cheers, Terry.
  12. Cheers Western! Glad i read this today though.
  13. Hi all, just been out & checked mine after reading this topic & it had dropped at least an inch resulting in me needing to add a full 2 litres of oil. It has probably been like that since my oil change about 8 weeks ago. Do you think it will have caused any damage? It sounds & runs ok. Cheers, Terry.
  14. Hi all, going to rebuild the bottom door frame in my front doors now that the weather is getting better, does anybody have any hints/tips as to how i should do this? Any previous experience would be helpfull before i dive in & make a mess. Cheers, Terry.
  15. Hi all, My Defender front door seems to be missing the channel at the front that the glass slides up & down in. Does anybody know if this part is available? Cheers, Terry.
  16. Hi all! Has anybody tried those tyre balancing beads from Devon 4x4? http://www.devon4x4.com/products_a/c214/tyre-balancing/0.html Cheers, Terry.
  17. I get enough exercise already from my landrover, sit ups, getting up & down from underneath it. I think i see more of the underside than of the top.
  18. I knew i was going wrong somewhere, thanks for the tip. Also thanks to everyone else, will get the angle grinder out in the morning, cheers Guys, Terry.
  19. My dog thinks the passenger seat is his & anyone else should sit in the middle.I'm sure he thinks he should be driving sometimes. Give the dog his seat & leave the wife behind.
  20. Hi all, Have just changed my prop u/j's & would like to grease them but all 3 of my grease guns will not fit in there. The rear prop is back on, but the front is still on the bench & still cant get the gun on the nipples. Does anyone else have this problem? Do i need a different grease gun? Do i need to fit longer nipples? Cheers, Terry.
  21. Can i retain the centre seat? Cheers, Terry.
  22. Cheers Les, got it all back together this afternoon (well pleased). Decided to replace all the bi-hex bolts but unfortunately i was sold the wrong caliper bolts(diferent thread, finer) so used old ones. Replaced bottom swivel pin as the old one had a slight ridge in it. The old top bush(railko),was in a bad way but that was to be expected as there was no oil in the housings when i bought it. I wouldn't have attempted it without all the help from you all & i'm sure the other side will be a breeze when i come to do it. Cheers! Terry.
  23. Hi all! Right! The swivel replacement kit from Paddocks arrived on Tuesday. I started the strip down at about 3.30 pm today(Thursday)& had it all stripped by 5pm. Everything seemed to go a bit too easy for my liking although the hints & tips from the Tech archive probably saved me hours. Also thanks for the recomendations for the correct tools( brake caliber bolts). Anyway, it's all stripped, (not expecting it to go back together as quick) just cleaned all muck from gasket surfaces & painted housing, mud shield etc... A few questions! 1) Should i replace all the Bi-hex bolts? (they came out ok) 2) Do all the bolts need loctiting in? 3) Should i replace the bottom swivel pin as it was not included in the kit? 4) Should i replace the CV joint while i am in there?(i don't want the expense)how often are these changed? 5) Should i use gasket seal on all joins, even though i have new gaskets & clean surfaces? 6) Being an older Def 90, can i?, & would there be any benefit in changing to the later swivels with bearings top & bottom as aposed to the top bush of the older type swivel. Thanks for any help, Terry.
  24. I'd like one too!! How much & where from? Cheers, Terry.
